It could be a model for all future (growth in Clarington. Brookhill Neighbourhood is a 600-acre area located north of the Bowmanville West Town Centre and west of the Bowmanville Creek. It includes the lands north of the new Clarington Central Secondary School. Brookhill derives it name from the 19 th century farm of Mark Munday located jon the west side of Regional Road 57. Clarington Council has determined that this neighbourhood neighbourhood will utilize smart growth principles and traditional (neighbourhood design, known as new urbanism. A traditional.neighbourhood traditional.neighbourhood structure will be reinforced with a walkable and connected street System, mixed and diverse (housing, quality design and overall support for smart transportation transportation options, environmental sustainability and high quality of life. The design will respect the Provincially significant significant wetlands located in the northern portions of the (neighbourhood. The process being used to design this new neighbourhood neighbourhood is new to Clarington. The Municipality's Planning Department has organized a 3-day neighbourhood design charrette to bring all the stakeholders together to develop the plan. A charrette refers to intense working sessions that are facilitated by urban design professionals. Charrettes utilize high levels of community and stakeholder input with constant feedback cycles throughout the day. (Both the detailed design issues and broader community (concepts are addressed at the same time. Rather than (simply responding to developer's proposals, the charrette (process constantly builds on new ideas from all stakeholders stakeholders that arise throughout the process. . The charrette begins today. The objective for today's ses- 1 sion is to review existing conditions, discuss key challenges and opportunities and develop fundamental principles to guide the preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan. Tomorrow, Thursday October 27 th , optional development concepts for the area will be prepared in the charrette for review and consideration. Lastly on November 2 nc *, a preerred preerred development master plan for the area will be deter- mined together with key urban design guidelines for the iiture development of the area. Residents are invited to the evening sessions that begin at 7 PM over the three days at the Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre (62 Temperance Street, Bowmanville). However, you may attend at any time as an observer of the Dther sessions with the municipal and agency staff, the developers and a community reference group.
