The Durham Regional Police continued their year long traffic strategy of "Staying Alive in 2005" that saw investigators from the Traffic Services Branch targeting targeting convicted, suspended or prohibited drivers in a two- week campaign. Officers arrested many of the offenders outside court buildings. After receiving sentences sentences and having their licenses licenses revoked by the courts, many of the offenders walked out of the court building and got into a vehicle to drive home. Through intelligence led policing, the members from the Traffic Enforcement Unit were able to target high-risk offenders to stop this practice. practice. Currently there are approx 430 people residing within the Region of Durham who have had their driving privileges suspended either by way of a court order or by virtue of the Ministry of Transportation. Over the two-week period 16 drivers were arrested and/or charged with various offences relating to driving while their licence were revoked by a court order or by the Ministry of Transportation. Transportation. As a result of this project 29 charges were laid. Charges ranged from Drive No Licence, Drive While Under Suspension, Improper Plates, No Insurance, and a variety of other criminal charges, which included Drive Disqualified. The Durham Regional Police would like to remind everyone to please drive to arrive alive.
