South of 49 ° by Jeanne Burnside Country Holidays I just got back inside to the warmth of my home after trying trying to get the outside Christmas decorations and lights done in time for American Thanksgiving which is tomorrow the fourth Thursday in November. My original plans to get this done this on the weekend went totally awry Friday evening when soap suds from the washer decided not to go . out to the septic tank because surprise--IT'S FULL! Thankfully, I was able to contact contact a 'honey bucket' owner in Pontypool who came to the rescue on Saturday. Unfortunately, he was expecting the area to be dug out and of course it wasn't. So, Mr. Ron and I dug for quite a while, moved several 50 lb. patio stones and finally located the caps. The actual pumping was quick. He was • off to his next job and I was left with two very large holes and a very muddy dog who thought this was just the greatest. greatest. I was most /fortunate to have a very bad head cold and happily couldn't smell a thing while trying my best to put back the very heavy clay dirt that was just a bit wet from Friday's snowstorm--another wonderful country-living experience. experience. On the positive side though, the ground wasn't frozen and I got my arms and back in shape for the snow shovelling just around the corner. corner. The remainder of Saturday was pretty much a write-off but decorating and shopping plans moved forward. Yesterday, I went off to do the food shopping and get the turkey. My personal preference preference is a butter basted bird and I am usually quite successful successful with the final product. It took visits to only three different different grocery stores to get one big enough--I guess all the larger turkeys are sent south of the border this week. Alas, another chore that took just a bit longer than anticipated. anticipated. Today is decorating day and luckily it is sunny but quite a bit chillier than this past Saturday. Jamming boughs and dogwood into window boxes and patio pots was tougher than I anticipated and extra tools and stamina were needed to loosen the now frozen dirt. Finally, when the lights are added--the house is transformed transformed and as dusk draws near--with the lights twinkling, twinkling, I smile to myself arid say "There is nothing like the holidays in the country." Now, if I could just get my fingers and toes to feel warm again... his sisters left to right - Joan Haring, June Alldread, Mable Cobbledick and Betty Collier attended the St. Saviour's Anglican Church Bazaar held a week ago as Saturday at the Orono Town Hall. q ^ ' Carolling at Kirby Sthoolhouse KIRBY -- Christmas celebrations celebrations at the one room schoolhouse. were eagerly anticipated by students each year. The special curtain was hung for the concert and the schoolhouse was decorated with crafts skillfully rendered by the school's students. Skits, music, and poetry were all practised with care. When the day arrived, the one room schoolhouse became became the centre of activity as families stomped through the snow to watch their children perform. It was a special time fondly remembered by any who were a part of it. The Kirby Centennial Public School Choir is returning returning to Kirby's one room schoolhouse to celebrate the heritage of the annual Christmas concert. Join us on Saturday, November 26th from 1:00 - 3:00 PM for Christmas carols, cookies and hot apple cider as Kirby Schoolhouse S.S. No. 14 rings with the sounds of Christmas once again.
