Wednesday. November 30, 2005 4 - Orono Weekly Times L 1 South of 49° by Jeanne Burnside Christmas Magic My younger sister Amy has two young children that fervently fervently believe in Santa Claus. At their tender ages they only ask for one special gift and she and her husband do their best to deliver on Santa's behalf. Last year her daughter Caitlan wanted a certain robotic robotic dog and Amy shopped early and got one. She had that, along with several other gifts in the trunk of her car in hiding from the prying eyes of the kids. Christmas Eve day, she left her car at a garage for an emergency brake job, leaving word for her husband to pick it up later on in the afternoon. She would be at another sister's home cooking and baking for the Christmas Eve family celebration. celebration. As luck would have it, he was delayed at work and did not get her message until after 6 p.m. Unfortunately, the garage closed promptly at 5 p.m. with Amy's car locked inside, along with the Christmas Christmas gifts. Her first reaction on hearing hearing the news was of course complete panic followed by an urge to break into the place. It seems the owner was unreachable. unreachable. Finally, she was forced to go out shopping on Christmas Eve surrounded by desperate people, under pressure, looking looking for anything. The special robotic dog was sold out weeks before and she was forced to settle for an imitation and hoped Caitlan wouldn't notice. Thankfully, her younger son Tommy was not as specific and she was able to replace his gifts through the picked-over merchandise. merchandise. On Christmas morning the kids awoke bright eyed and ready to dive under the tree for their presents. Caitlan un-wrapped her special gift-and looked a bit incredulous as she announced Santa had made a mistake. A few tears rolled down her cheek as she explained that Santa had given her someone else's gift and they must have her gift. She said she would not open the package and asked her parents if they could get in touch with Santa to make the exchange. After a few moments, she perked right up and proceeded to play with her other gifts and all seemed well. Fortunately, Boxing Day is not a holiday in the States and Amy went over first thing to pick up her car. Later that morning, Caitlan asked her mom if she was able to reach Santa, and Amy replied that she had, and the elves were checking into it. As dusk approached, two of my other sisters secretly arrived at Amy's home. They stood on the back porch and started jingling jingling bells and left the special package. On cue, both Caitlan and Tommy wanted to know what all the noise was and ran to the back door. On the step was a package for Caitlan with a note explaining there had been a mix-up. To this day both kids insist they saw Santa's sleigh riding off in the sky. A few days later Amy made an error at work and was quite upset when she got home. She was telling the story to her husband husband when Caitlan chimed in "Don't worry Mommy, even Santa makes mistakes." School Continued from front student size," stated Lloyd in her letter. Regardless of whether Hampton Public School stays open, or closes, Lloyd says the Board is adding their voices to that of the parents in requesting the Municipality provide for sidewalks, crossing guards and consideration of fourway fourway flashers on Old Scugog Road. "We're going to deliver a real clear message to the School Board," said Mayor Mutton at Monday's council meeting. "What the heck are you doing?" "They are sending a mixed message to council and the public, asking for capital improvements," stated Mutton. If they did close the Hampton School the improvements improvements would be a "gross misuse misuse of municipal funds," he stated. The matter was referred to the Director of Engineering, "Who, I expect, will make a call to the School Board to see what's going on," Mutton said.
