The program which was launched in Clarington in 1998, got a boost last year through additional funding from the Trillium Foundation, Foundation, and the Lions Club of Bowmanville through the Jack Munday Memorial Fund. With the new funds Big Brothers and Sisters of Clarington were able to hire a full time In-School Mentoring Mentoring Coordinator, Mr. Dave Dobson. Dobson is committed committed to increasing the number of mentors in Clarington schools to 100, by the end of lernj Christmas Kim Dickerson, RMT Massage Gift Certificates available Ready for giving! 1 hour ~ $70 • Half hour ~ $45 5331 Main St., Orono • 905-983-5510 Happy Holidays from Terrens Wellness Centre January 2006. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters In-School Mentoring program matches an adult volunteer volunteer (mentor) with a child (mentee) in a school environment. environment. Through the program, mentors spend a noon hour a week at school with a young girl or boy from a single parent parent family. It has been found that children build a positive friendship with a mentee which often strengthens their self esteem and school performance. performance. The children involved in the In-School Mentoring program program at Orono Public School all agreed, they would rather be spending time with their mentor than their normal lunch time activities at school. "We get to play hockey inside," mentee Nathan Wannamaker told the Orono Times reporter last week. Normally students are not permitted permitted to play hockey inside the school. "I'm not sure who gets more out of it, the mentee or myself," said Ray Christopher who is mentoring mentoring at Kirby Centennial School. "I get to be a kid and go to school again," he said. 'I'm a retired adult and I get to play dodge ball, soccer and knee board with a kid whose face lights up when he sees me," he stated. Last year at this time, Big Brothers and Sisters had two mentors and two mentees in the local schools. Now they have seven adults mentoring nine children. The program requires a commitment of one hour a week, usually during lunch time, to spend with a child at their school. The mentors interviewed by the Orono Times last week at Orono Public School, all claimed the training they received from Big Brothers was very effective, and they were not apprehensive going into the school for the first time. Ray Christopher and Suzanne Guymer were recruited to be mentors by Dobson through a presentation presentation he made at the Kendal Lions Club. Matt Easterbrook Easterbrook said he was volunteering volunteering at Orono Public School when he was "voluntold" to enter the In-School Mentoring Mentoring program Easterbrook's said the program program has been very rewarding for him, as he can already see the positive results in the child he has been mentoring since September. According to Easterbrooks his mentee will now think things through, where before he would lash out in anger. Mentees selected for the program are kids who through encouragement could realize their full potential by learning to feel good about themselves. There is no experience necessary necessary to become a mentor. All you need is interest, enthusiasm enthusiasm and a genuine concern for your mentee. To take the first step to becoming a mentor, call Dave Dobson at the Big Brothers and Sisters Clarington office, 905-623-3339.
