Wednesday, January 25,2006 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've done time by Clifford Francis Election fever The last few days have been hill of talk about the election taking place. The story was completed last night with Bev Oda of the Conservative Party winning in this riding. While I was voting, a local gentleman asked me if f was interested in becoming a politician? politician? I had given it little or no thought until last evening Since then, I have been weighing the possibilities and making a few calls. Now I don't know which way to go, be a councillor or the mayor. It would be a tough sell as I have no experience, what so ever. Having never belonged to any organizations or committees only makes matters matters worse. The cost of the campaign is no worry as money for this seems to be no problem; lots of backers it seems. Running for council would be good but when I was elected there would be no more votes with everyone voting unanimously. unanimously. There has to be opposition opposition on some issues I'm sure. :. Getting, a decent wage for Clarington workers would be high on my agenda. Poor wages makes a lot of these folks take on second jobs and that work load is just too much. Being a hands on Councillor I would boost the moral of all workers. Becoming mayor might not - be so bad either. Traveling abroad and out of province would be okay. Not being married, married, I wouldn't have to take a wife along, only a secretary at less expense, that should gamer a few votes. Not being a driver would cut the mileage expense to nothing. If I needed a ride somewhere somewhere I'd go with a by-law officer, that would leave more parking at the Town Hall as I wouldn't need the Mayor's parking spot. I suppose if I do run, they would find skeletons in my closet. Quite a few I think, but the door is open. ; Now to get elected I will need to campaign and so a nice double decker bus would be in order and maybe a helicopter to get around in quick. So far it is just a thought but... Continued from front /system, Municipal Clerk Patti Barrie expects the number number of people required to work on election day will be less than 20. The automated system can tabulate ballots at the rate of 5,600 per hour. Results of the municipal election this November will . be tabulated more quickly on election night, as the manual counting of ballots will have been eliminated.. ..flu-: • ! • >*àràr -V-V-V- ; r, Sdiiçt: d Valentines Day message to that «.'/special'person in your life and We will ijf .pahlish' them in our Valentines Day issue, February 8th! Port Granby Continued from front It was at this suggestion that the LLRWMO reassessed reassessed the design and came up with the improved cap dèsign. , The LLRWMO will also upgrade the roads they will be using to bring in construction material to the new site. These haul roads to be upgraded are, Newtonville Road south of the 401, Concession Road 1 east to Elliott Road, and Elliott Road south the new site. Councillor Trim indicated that the Technical Memorandum Memorandum from Atomic Energy Canada Limited *:to Glenn Case, (a copy of which was included in Monday's GP&A agenda,) stated, "It is recommended recommended by the LLRWMQ.that a cost-sharing agreement be developed with. he Municipality of Clarington to address the costs associated with upgrading various road segments along the Main Haulage Route for the construction construction materials." Trim wondered why the Municipality would share road upgrade costs with the LLRWMO. Clarington's CAO, Mr. Frank. Wu, told Committee of Council that Clarington's cost sharing portion portion would be zero. "Through negotiations in 2000, Mr. Hefferon (Municipal (Municipal Solicitor) and myself made it very clear to the Federal Government, we will not absorb any cost in terms of relocating the waste," stated Wu. The LLRWMO have also agreed to constmct a temporary temporary underpass at Lakeshore Road, to accommodate transportation transportation of the waste from it's current location, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, just east of the Port Granby village, to the new permanent waste storage facility just north of Lakeshore Road.
