MacDonald The world certainly seems a small place sometimes, but it's great that you can meet the nicest people. My wife, Helen, says "things happen for a reason" - a fatalist, I guess you'd call her. Anyway our family of four, along with Julie, our eldest son's girlfriend, girlfriend, went for a holiday over Christmas to Portugal. We had a lovely time, saw lots of interesting things, had good weather, ate plenty of great food and met some wonderful people. We took a two day excursion excursion that included sight-seeing in Seville, Spain and then onward to Gilbraltar, "the rock". Seville (Sevilla to the Spaniards) was lovely with lots of beautiful architecture, history, palm trees and-orange trees, and, of course, the compulsory compulsory shopping. Gibraltar was awesome! It's only 2 Vi square kilometres, has a population population of 30,000 (plus about 300 monkeys!), the largest dry dock in Europe, more miles of tunnels (36) than it has miles of open roads, but the most impressive thing is "the rock- itself. Most of us grew up familiar with the expression "solid as the rock of Gilbraltar"... well it appears truer words were never spoken. spoken. The rock is 1400 feet high and has à switchback steep narrow road that runs up about 2/3 of the way. There is a cable car that also goes to the very top. This rock is made of a very hard limestone and rises up out the ocean, towering towering over Spain which is immediately immediately to the north, and from which you can see (south) to Africa, which is only 14 miles across the Mediterranean. Unfortunately the day we were there it was very hazy and we couldn't see Africa, but on a clear day it is possible. possible. In 1938 the English brought miners to excavate the tunnels to house the armed forces they anticipated were going to be needed to battle Hitler's war machine, as Gibraltar has historically controlled controlled all sea-going traffic in and out of the Mediterranean During W.W. II, 20,000 allied troops were housed in these tunnels. While enjoying the sights and absorbing all this history, we got to know the other couple couple on our tour, Robin and Ed McDonald. She is a retired teacher and principal, he a semi-retired machinist. Dufing the course of our conversation conversation they mentioned that they were from County Norfolk in England. As fate would have it, they live only 12 miles from where my grandfather was born, in a small place called Castle Acre. Grandpa lived there until he was six years old, when he was turned over by his widowed widowed father to the Bamardo home. His mother had died while birthing him and he had been shunted back and forth between his grandparents while his father worked as a farm labourer. For reasons we can only speculate, his father placed him in the custody of the Bamardo Home and he was soon sent to Canada, as were thousands of other chil- Seniors Euchre 1st. MaeTabb 83 2nd. It's thought that as many as 10% of Canadians have at least one Bamardo ancestor. Anyhow Grandpa never saw his father, nor his birthplace, again. The fact that I dabble in my genealogy always has a way of emerging in conversations, and much to my surprise Robin and Ed offered to make a day trip to Castle Acre and take some photographs of where my grandfather lived as a child! Having returned home from their holiday, that's exactly what they did. Last week, we received in the mail some beautiful photos from Castle Acre and environs on a CD, as well as some literature they picked up at St. James Church of the local parish. The kindness they have extended me, a stranger from another country who only briefly met them while on holiday, holiday, is truly exceptional and reinforces one's faith in humanity! Of special significance ~to me was that Ed gave me a demonstration of the dialect my grandfather would have spoken as a child. It was very rapid, sounded like a foreign language and I didn't understand understand one word of it - even though it was supposed to be English! - but it sounded fascinating, fascinating, especially in light of the fact that because grandpa came here at such an early age, he lost his English [Norfolk] accent. Thank you Robin and Ed for a view into a portal I'd never seen before and never imagined I might!
