16 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, February 22, 2006 A HOME GROWN HERO'S .LEGACY In the spring of 2005, Council approved a report that would result in the official recognition of the work of a home grown, hero - Dr. Ross Tilley - and the Canadian arm of the Guinea Pig Club. During World War II, Dr. Tilley served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as Principal Medical Officer. In 1942, Dr. Tilley transferred to the Queen Victoria. Hospital in East Grinstead (Sussex) where a Canadian wing was being built. The wing accommodated the increasing number of Canadian casualties and Dr. Tilley was a major participant in its construction. It was here that.Dr. Tilley worked and learned under the guidance of Sir Archibald Mclndoe -, Britain's legendary plastic surgeon. surgeon. In recognition of his leadership in pioneering new techniques for treating burns, Dr. Tilley was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (1944). After the war, Dr. Tilley returned home as a highly skilled burn surgeon. His innovative skin graft techniques are still used in the successful treatment of severe burns. He practiced his craft at The Wellesley and Sunnybrook Hospitals and became revered as a both a humanitarian and a great teacher. In 1982, he was. honoured with the Order of Canada for his leadership and contributions to the field of plastic surgery. Dr. Tilley's dedication and commitment to treating burn victims led him and some colleagues to (successfully) campaign to have the very first burn centre built - it officially opened in April of 1984. On February 13,2006, it was my privilege to present a special print, by artist Tony Johnson. The print commemorates commemorates the work of Dr. Tilley; the heroics of the members of The Guinea Pig Club of. Canada and the creation of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre. Attending the presentation was Dr. Leith Douglas former Medical Liaison Officer to the Executive of the Guinea Pig Club and a friend of both the members of the Club and Dr. Ross Tilley. Dr. Douglas was presented a copy of the print as did the Bowmanville Branch of the Canadian Legion. A copy of this print will be hung in Ross Tilley Public School, and in the Ross Tilley Burn Centre attached to Sunnybrook Hospital. .One will also be on public display at the Municipal Administrative Centre (40 Temperance Street, Bowmanville). Some of the information presented in this article was excerpted from material located on the Sunnybrook & Women's Hospital website (http://www.sunnybrookandwomens.on.ca/programs/trauma/rtbc).
