Wednesday, February 22, 2006 by Jeanne Burnside New girl in town For many months my husband kept hinting that he Wanted another dog, mostly as a playmate for our very lovely but • energetic. Airedale, Angus. I finally relented and. in November called the breeder' to see if any puppies were in the works. As luck would have it, one of her dogs was expecting a litter in late December and plans were made for us to. get a little sister for .our pooch. On Christmas night we received an e-mail announcing the birth of the pups and . have been awaiting her arrival in Orono. My husband's initial thought was to name her 'Merry' but after much discussion, discussion, we settled oh' Katie--a solid Irish name that seems to fit the little bruiser. Her arrival coincided with the onslaught of some bitter winter weather and our property has become quite treacherous with huge ice sheets on the hills and driveway. Assimilating Katie to her surroundings and setting setting up a house-training routine routine have become mini- Olympic events. I can definitely definitely relate to all the, athletes' athletes' falls and spills as the recipient of many bumps and bruises even with my cushioned bottom in the • ongoing ; 'Katie-catch-me-if- you-can'. The first event was the trip to pick her up. The breeder lives in Port Elgin and I. have only been there once in late spring on a lovely, lovely, sunny day; Luckily, her daughter was playing in the 1 Silver Stick Tournament this. past weekend and plans were made to meet them Thursday night in Aurora. Fortunately, I have never driven in an ice storm and I we were staying on the road even if it was a bit side-ways at times. Thankfully we arrived home safely with some frazzled nerves immediately immediately comforted by some deserved hot toddies. Although I was prepared with several chew toys and cushioned crate, my husband husband had forgotten how razor-sharp a puppy's teeth can be and suffered a flash attack as his welcome. After bandaging my husband's arm, Angus and Katie had their first roll-around. It ended with Angus running out his dog door for safety- only to realize Katie was just a few steps behind him. It took her just two tries to push open the flap to pursue \ her brother. Unlike my - other puppy experiences, this dog, runs'in. over-drive as a rule and can get into almost anything in seconds and does. Offer- : ing my hot-pink glove as a bribe to get her back didn't 'do the trick, so I very delir- cately climbed over the barbed-wire .for. her retrieval. retrieval. What's a few pulls in my jeans for year's of fun with this possessed pet! The only really good news' is she so completely wipes herself out. on these romps that she . sleeps like an angel when it's over. My fears of jealousy by Angus have been totally squashed and if anything I fear for him. Last time I looked Katie had glommed onto to him with those Dracula teeth and they were rolling down the hill together. together. He seems no worse for the hope never to repeat the wear and actually is quite ■experience. At one point the protective of her. And, speaking of the hockey museum, two weeks ago in this paper, the Mayor was quoted as saying that "One thing I've been hearing loud and clear, the public don't want anything forced on them.". This was him speaking at Council in reference reference to the Beech Avenue heritage fiasco. If that's the case, and if the Mayor is still 'listening', then why is he trying to ram the hockey museum down our throats?
