4 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, February 22, 2006 "DON'T WEIGHT" TOPS opens new chapter in Orono By Donna Wood Trying to lose weight can be hard, keeping the weight off is a much bigger challenge, challenge, one that's best achieved with the support of others. Gwen MacDonald has been a member of TOPS for eleven years, losing over 116 lbs. She had tried Weight Watchers, and other diets, to no avail and found TOPS provided a support support group aspect where everybody is a "group member" member" and that's what makes it work. TOPS, a non-profit weight loss group, is opening a new chapter next week in Orono. TOPS, (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) was founded by Esther S. Manz, in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1948. and now has over 10,000 chapters in the United States and Canada. Their mission is to support members as they take off pounds sensibly. "Recognition is an important factor in losing weight; Even small accomplishments are recognized with lots of awards" says Gwen, Area Director and 2003 TOPS Provincial Queen. TOPS provides its mem bers with tools for losing weight, a diet plan, food diary, menus, and an exercise plan. There is no food to buy and no sales are to be made. Goal weights are set with a healthcare healthcare professional. Each week there is a private weigh-in, followed -by. a program that provides members with positive positive reinforcement and motivation. motivation. Grants Continued from front Association who requested $77,000. The Newcastle Community Community Hall Board and the Clarington Older Adult Association Association were awarded $5,000 each, while the Mental Health Association received a grant of $1,500. Four of the applications were denied. The Enniskillen Public School Parent Council asked for $5,000 to assist with the purchase of replacement playground equipment at the Enniskillen Public School. That application was turned down with a reminder to the school council that they had received a one time grant of $700 in 1997 to assist in the purchase of new playground equipment. The Distress Centre of Durham and the Volunteer Resource Centre of Durham Region were both denied. The request put forward by Mark Canning for Rinding in the amount of $938.40 for a community newsletter for tlie citizens of Tyrone and surrounding surrounding area was turned ~ down. As in past years the four horticultural clubs operating in the Municipality each received a $500 grant. Four of the seven volunteer community hall boards, including including the Orono Town Hall Board, received grants of $3,000. While Newcastle received $5,000 the Hampton and Newtonville Community Hall boards received $2,500. each. ' 1 " The Newcastle Santa Claus Parade Committee requested a grant of $2,500 which they received. The Newcastle Village and District Historical Society received a grant in the amount they requested -- $1,500. The Newcastle Arena Management Board requested a grant for $5,000 which was approved, and their Skating Club requested a grant of $3,000 of which they received half. The Newcastle Farmers Market asked for a $5,000 grant, but were awarded $500. In all $16,500 in Municipal Grant money went to Newcastle groups. Orono Community groups received $7,000 in grants, The Orono Town Hall Board requested $5,000 and were , awarded $3,000, the Orono Amateur Athletic Association received $2,000 from their : request of $2,500 and the Orono Figure Skating Club. was awarded; $1,500. They had applied for $4,500. After councillors dealt with all the grand applications, applications, there was $16,000 left in municipal grant fund. A gourmet dinner was prepared for family and friends of the volleyball team members. During the evening, various prizes were raffled raffled off as well as a silent auction was held. Local chef, Ross Winters, pictured above prepared the evening meal and coach Michelle Walters (pictured) helped team members serve the meal. The successful event raised $1500.00 for the players.
