Wednesday, March 1,2006 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've done time by Clifford Francis f The Olympics I spent the past two weeks glued to the 'telly' watching the Olympics. That took up a lot of my time as the live coverage started at 3 a.m., with curling always first on the agenda. The Canadian ladies had one older woman on the team and were lucky to get a bronze medal. The men were even luckier to have Russ Howard, a fifty year-old on their team. He did curl good in the last two games, but it's a young person's sport. Nice to see the boys from down home on 'The Rock' win. Way to Go! The speed skaters were something to behold. The girls showed 'em where 'it was at; Who. would; have dreamed that Cindy Klassen would win five medals. And, I was so pleased to see Clara Hughes become a double winner in both summer, and winter Olympics. À medal on the bike and gold on the ice. Was : I disappointed in the hockey? Not really. The girls were great and I thought it was a given that they'd win, gold. The men went with their elder statesmen, and they couldn't adjust to the larger ice surface. If the young kids had've been on the team, they would have adapted easily. Ski jumping had a Canadian in it for the first time in a lot of years. He jumped good for a young lad not 20 years old. I was telling someone how much I liked that sport and they asked if I had ever participated? participated? I told him, I'd jumped lots of things including including the big jump at Thunder Bay. When I jumped at 'Big Thunder', from the ninety metre hill, I used down hill skis, not jumping skis that are longer. That was a feat in itself--landing safely on a pair of skis like that. Seeing the bobsled run and the Canadian bobsledders brought back some memories. memories. I'd been to Calgary with the girl friend visiting, and went up to look at the bobsled bobsled run. ■ While crossing from one side of the track to the other, I lost my grip and went down the track head first. It was an experience I will never forget. forget. ; They talked me into taking a ride down in the sled because I had used one as a kid many times. The girlfriend girlfriend was 40 pounds over and she got in first, and then I pushed off. I had quite a time : getting any grip, on the ice wearing cowboy boots--but soon, we were rolling : down the track. The speed was a bit fast, but all and all it was fun. I hugged the girl friend and told her it was the second best ride in my life. The best part of the Olympics was seeing Chari- r dra Crawford crosscountry ski and her accepting the gold medal. Wonderful, wonder- ' full . You did us proud. The study cost the Municipality $39,000. According to Brown, through'his consultation with local user groups, stakeholders, stakeholders, the public and municipal staff, what he heard was that the quality of the ice facility in Newcastle was viewed as a negative aspect, and not comparable to the level of service in other parts of Clarington. At the June 20, 2005 General Purpose and Administration Committee, Clarington Coucillors approved approved the relocation of the canteen, and approved Brown's recommendation to build a $16.8 million twin pad arena in Newcastle. It was proposed that construction construction begin in late spring 2006 in time for a fall 2007 opening. opening. The following week council council overturned their decision to build a new twin pad arena in Newcastle, opting instead to build an indoor swimming pool facility with gymnasium and meeting rooms, as the first phase of the new recreational recreational facility in Newcastle. Completion date for the new pool should be in the Fall of 2007, and there is now no time table for a new arena complex in Newcastle. Heart Disease Support the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
