Ofono Weekly Times - 5 Wednesday, April 5,2006 Durham Region Transit receives funding from province WHITBY/ON - April 3, 2006 - Durham Region Transit (DRT) has been awarded a one-time grant of over $10.6 million from the Government of Ontario, which can be used to replace or refurbish local buses. The grant was awarded under the former Ontario Transit ' Vehicle One-Third Funding Program (OTVP), which will be replaced with a new multi-year bus replacement replacement program, Move Ontario,, in 2007. "This, one-time government government grant will go a long way to helping local transit restore its aging fleet, while providing more, reliable service for riders," said Roger Anderson, Chair of the Regional Municipality of Durham. DRT will use the funding to replace an aging bus fleet, in the Region, as well as provide new buses for a proposed route expansion. The donation was used to print a historical booklet on Newcastle which will be sold to the public in May and distributed free to local schools and libraries. Senior of the year nomination Clarington Council nominated nominated life long farmer, Mr. Gord Barrie as their choice for the Province's Senior of the Year Award. The awards were established by the Province of Ontario in 1994 to give municipalités an opportunity to honour one of their outstanding outstanding local seniors. Barrie's name was put forward forward by Councillor Gord Robinson, at Monday night's council meeting. Barrie's list of accomlishments and volun teer activity, as read out by Robinson include: Chairperson Chairperson of Congregational Council, Council, Trinity United Church, 1981-1982; served on the Durham County Milk Committee; Committee; Director, and recipient of the Long-Term Service Award, for the United Cooperatives Cooperatives of Ontario; member member of Ontario Federation of Agriculture; Director, Durham County Seniors Complex, and Chairman of Abandoned Cemeteries Board, 1974 to present, to name a few.
