Earth Day is recognized internationally, in over i 180 countries, and has grown so ' much that celebrations ;, take place throughout the month of April. Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. Earth Day's goal is to ensure that future generations enjoy clean air, water, wildlife, and the recreation that our natural environment - forests, rivers and lakes - provides. This Saturday there are two Earth Day events scheduled in Clarington. 1. COMMUNITY PLANTING EVENT j n association with the Hampton Pond Recovery Project. Help the Hampton Citizen's Association, the Municipality of Clarington and the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) plant 400 trees and shrubs. This is a BYOS (bring your own shovel) shovel) event and runs from 9:00 -11:30 AM. All participants are to meet at the Trail Entrance on Mill Street. This event includes a presentation on the fish in the Wilmot Creek and the history of the Newcastle Fish Hatchery; a ribbon cutting for the new Bluff Trail Shelter; and a volunteer tree planting opportunity. Activities run from 10 AM to 12 NOON and interested participants can access the nature area at the south end of Cobbledick Road. The Municipality ohClarington has identified alternative design concepts for the improvement of the Mill Street Subway, Newcastle, in conjunction with providing additional additional vehicular capacity for Mill Street. A number of alternative alternative design approaches have been considered following the first public meeting held on May 3,2001. The consensus consensus from this meeting favoured replacing the subway and widening Mill Street to provide the extra capacity needed to cater to normal traffic and development traffic increases. The works are planned under Class Environmental Assessment for Municipal Roads with a Schedule 'C category. As required by this process, a second Public Information Centre is planned to present alternative concepts and a recommended design. Input from the public is solicited.
