Wednesday, May 3,2006 Orono Weekly Times - 3 South of 49° by Jeanne Burnside Forget spring Of all the seasons, spring is my least favorite. For the past few days I have been on cleanup cleanup detail. This is the time of year I have to keep remembering the good tilings about country living. Although we had a relatively mild winter, the mess from snow plows and wind etc. is quite prevalent and can seem endless while cleaning up. Add to that, several decimated plush dog toys from the holidays with tile stuffing strewn around like . little remnants of snow, and window boxes that were still full of browning holiday greenery. greenery. It takes about five wheel- barrows full to actually see you are making a dent in the debris and at this point I know I've emptied that thing at least thirty times. Thankfully the mild weather has made the chores a bit easier to take and has forced me to stay outside a bit longer to get the job done. A few days ago the two mallards mallards that have called my pond home for the last three years • have returned, and caught the eye of my new puppy and her older brother.. Luckily, Aire- dales don't prefer to swim and the ducks seem totally unfazed by the two running round 'n' round. The pooches have also started digging several holes around the property where - moles used to be. It has become quite a little game with them--I fill in the holes with new topsoil, topsoil, they find another scent and dig a few feet away. One area in particular had them both digging digging furiously and all one could see were two terrier butts sticking sticking out of the ground and dirt flying flying up and out! Another reason for my dislike dislike of spring is my allergies. In addition to the sinus headaches and watery eyes, my skin has broken out in hives and rashes from the cedars and fir trees. You know you are looking a bit scary when you come into town and everyone starts staring and asks what happened to you. My response is you should have seen me before I took my medicine. medicine. The good news is that it only seems to last a few weeks and then somehow I become assimilated and the skin irritation irritation stops. My final and maybe most important reason for not being crazy about spring is that all the layers I was wearing in the winter winter come off and I have to face reality that summer is coming. All those hearty dinners and lack of exercise have given me an extra layer that I better get rid of if I have any hope of buttoning buttoning my summer clothes. After working all day outside, I come in to a salad dinner and crunch- es-Htjust doesn't seem fair. On the positive side my magnolia tree is in full bloom and planting some pansies have added that splash of color. The clean-up is almost finished and the lawns are greening up. Hopefully in a few more weeks a slimmer me will be planting / my window boxes and enjoying the sunshine. Now if I could just figure out a way to get the doggies doggies to stop digging up the place... r-----i Brigitte Brown 171 Mill Street, Orono, ON L0B1M0 ; 905-983-8169 ESTHETIC studio • Pedicures/Manicures • Waxing • Paraffin Wax • Nail Extensions • (EMS) • Air Brushing • Eyelash Tinting 15% DISCOUNT with coupon Funding Continued from front fund something that should be funded by the province. Prior to the vote, Councillor Councillor Don McArthur said, "This is not a matter of the western part of the Municipality against the eastern part. When Creamer returned to the Home Show on Sunday, he says he found Abemethy's booth to be in compliance with the policy. Abemethy told the Orono Times, following the Show, "While I chose to restrict MORRIS FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD. Our municipal tax payers should not have to pay directly out of municipal taxes for that." After the resolution was lost, council approved a motion from councillor Pingle to refer the matter to the Operations Department, to see if the OCLT could borrow a chipper from the Municipality to use in their fight against dog strangling vine. "I don't want to give the province one red cent or one bit of encouragement," stated Pingle. "We do need more drippers," she said. "If we bought a chipper and if there was any way, we could loan it to these people without having our insurance people go crazy," she stated. The Operations Department will look into finding some kind of working relationship with the Orono Crown Lands Trust. Crown Lands Trust Chairman, Chairman, Mr. John Slater, said upon hearing the outcome of the vote, "although we would rather have owned a chipper, at least this leaves the door open for the use of a chipper." myself to comply with Mr. Creamer's requirements, it doesn't mean I agree with the policy." He also said he is considering his options, as to his rights in this matter. He did continue to hand out water bottles without his label attached, and meet people people on Sunday. He was pleased with the level of interest he received from the public on all three days of the Home Show. The Kinsmen Club was very pleased with the turnout to this year's home show, which was attended by Mayor Mutton and some of the Clarington councillors.
