Lena's Auction Committee Helmet safety reminder for all Durham Region residents WHITBY, ON, May 9, 2006 - Durham Region Health Department, in collaboration with the Durham Safely on Wheels Coalition, is reminding reminding area residents about the importance of helmet safety as the summer nears. To promote this important safety message, the Health Department will be distributing information brochures brochures to area elementary schools throughout Durham Region. "Health Department statistics statistics show that in 2004, only 65 per cent of Durham Region residents reported always wearing a helmet while bicycling, bicycling, compared to 74 per cent in 2001," said Yemisi Aladesua, a public health nurse with the Health Department. "It's important to note that helmets should also be used when skateboarding, in-line or roller skating, or riding riding a scooter. " Each year, nearly 500 people people in Ontario are hospitalized with a skateboard, in-line skate, roller skate, or scooter injury. Research indicates that helmets, when worn properly, can reduce the risks of brain injury by 88 per cent, head" injuries by 85 per' cent and upper and mid-facial injury by 65 per cent. ■ The proper use of helmets is just as important as wearing one in the first place. A helmet should be level on the head, touching all around and comfortably comfortably snug, but not too tight. It should rest no higher than two finger widths above the eyebrows, wearing nothing nothing underneath the helmet, as this changes the way a helmet sits on the head. Children's helmets should be frequently checked and adjusted for • proper fit because their heads are growing and changing. "Bicycle-related injuries can be greatly reduced with the use of helmets because they are effective for cyclists of all ages and can help provide provide protection in all types of crashes," explained Ms. Aladesua. Helmets should meet regulated regulated safety standards and be replaced every five years, or after any fall or crash. Children should learn to remove their helmets on playgrounds playgrounds or around trees to avoid choking injuries due to the strap catching on equipment equipment or branches.
