I f 0 12 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, May 17,2006 NEW NUCLEAR BUILD IMPACT ON LABOUR New nuclear build in Clarington would bring significant benefits in terms of employment associated with reactor construction. j I will outline the numbers and types Sa of employment that would occur as a result of new nuclear build in Clarington. This information assumes peak personnel for a 2-unit CANDU build. A five- year construction schedule from site preparation to commercial commercial operation is assumed for each plant with 18 months for site preparation and 72 months for construction. It also assumes 6-12 months for testing and commissioning activities. The labour necessary to support CANDU construction includes: The total construction labour outlined above represents over 60% of the total on-site labour during plant construction. In addition to this, various other workers will be need in supervision, supervision, indirect labour and quality control. In total, 4200 jobs would be created by a new nuclear build in Clarington. These jobs would be highly-skilled and would' be of high value to Clarington's economy. This new build will have the added benefit of maintaining and enhancing a highly-skilled and highly-paid workforce in Clarington. NOTE: These numbers are preliminary and once the announcement is made to locate the new nuclear build in Clarington, a more detailed study will be undertaken to update the construction labour data.
