This year's theme for SummerActive in Durham Region is "Take to the Trails", which coincides with .the Ontario Trails Council's (OTC) campaign to increase awareness of trails throughout the province. As part of the Ontario Trails Strategy, the OTC has linked-up 24 public health units across the province to partner with their local trail associations to help raise awareness of the availability availability of traite throughout Ontario communities. The Ontario Trails Strategy is a critical component of the provincial government's ACTIVE 2010 plan that aims to increase physical activity rates among Ontario residents. The goal is that by 2010, 55 per cent of Ontarians will be physically active enough to benefit their health. "The OTC Trails Strategy is great news for Durham Region," said Chris Amott, a public health nurse with the Durham Region Health Department. Department. "We have a large number and variety of trails throughout the area and the Region recently conducted public consultations for both a Regional Cycling Plan and a "trail system connecting all area municipalities, "Trails can provide a variety variety of opportunities to be active such as hiking, biking or jogging which all greatly - benefit your health. Research has shown that health benefits of increased physical activity include weight control, helping helping to prevent heart disease and diabetes, controlling cholesterol levels, slowing bone, loss resulting from advancing age, lowering the risk of certain cancers and helping to reduce anxiety and depression." Victoria Day Long Weekend Operation Cottage Bound On Thursday May 18th, 2006 the DRPS will continue with its yearlong initiative "Drive to Stay Alive" by launching Operation Cottage Bound. Officers from the Traffic Services Unit along with members from all the Community Police Offices will concentrate their enforcement enforcement on cottage bound traffic. The officers will be watching closely for aggressive driving, seatbelt violations, unsafe and improperly loaded vehicles, as well as drinking and driving offences. Please keep in mind that traffic volume will increase 10 fold on Thursday and Friday due to the long weekend and again on Sunday evening. Expect delays, plan for them and drive with respect and patience. Since this is also the season for School Proms, The Traffic Service Unit would, like to take this time to encourage all parents of prom-going teenagers to talk with their children on their plans for the evening. Planning ahead and helping helping to arrange for alternative transportation will make this a happy and joyous celebration for both the students and the parents.
