Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Letters to the Editor Kendal Days and days gone by Open Letter: In my quest to become councillor, representing the people of Ward 4, it was suggested suggested that my family and I attend the Kendal Days event, even though the only vote I may get there would be from Gord Robinson himself. Anyway, Lorraine and I loaded up the kids and headed for Kendal around noon on Saturday. Upon arriving, I was surprised surprised at how many people I didn't know and how time changes everything. We walked walked around, shook a few hands and sat down for a lunch of burgers and hot dogs. Due to a previous commitment, commitment, we couldn't stay long. However, I was there long enough to see how well this day was organized. A tribute to the folks in Kendal. On the way out, someone yelled, "Looking for votes, Jonesy?" I didn't' have to turn around to know it was Bob Robinson. I'd heard that voice many times behind me on the ball diamond, across the way. Lorraine and I talked with Shirley and Bob a bit and I told them I didn't think I'd won their vote, but it sure was nice to see them again. We also talked with Jane and Ralph Kennedy and reminisced a while about days gone by; great days. As we drove away, I though to myself, that if council council could work together as well as these people do in Kendal, we'd have something. To the people of Kendal: keep up the good work and thanks for the memories. Paul Jones, Orono Don't paint them all with same brush Letter to the editor: In response to the last letter regarding the skateboarders of Orono; - ■ - It was unfortunate that names were used in the first article. This has led to anger and upset. It is even more unfortunate that the response letter branded all skaters with the same brush. I don't believe for one minute that all the behaviours discussed in the letter can be attributed to this exact group of boys. My intention for the first article was to rally support from the community to aid in the boy's quest for a skate park. Not to illicit the response received from Arena Staff. Skateboarding is not going to go away as it is a multi-million multi-million dollar industry. It is clear that the boys are not wanted on the streets or in any of the public facilities, yet we provide provide no alternative. The anwer really is quite simple. If you you don't want them on the streets, then provide them with a safe area in which to enjoy the sport.
