Activities for Children (note new time for summer services) J da Meanwhile back on the ridge by David Craig A couple of things have been bothering me for the -last couple of weeks. Firstly, we must live in the fastest growing growing area in the world. North and east of Oshawa and all over Bowmanville, houses are springing up seemingly, seemingly, almost overnight. Unlike the Mayor and Council, I find the increased traffic, people and confusion--a regressive regressive step. I liked it as it was fifty years ago. What I don't understand understand is the attitude towards top soil. I read •or was taught that all humanity depends upon its existence; on that first five or six inches of topsoil created over eons by bacteria and weather breaking down the vegetation vegetation and rock to create a growing soil. As a farmer we use manure and plowed down crops to further increase and • enrich the soil. ' À developer's first step is to push all the topsoil into a mountain and then truck it away to be buried someplace. When the new homeowner comes to plant a tree or some shrubs he has to get a jackhammer to dig a hole in the impervious subsoil that is left. Last week I was privileged privileged to help community community care with their tag days. It is a job I hate. The couple before me at my location have done everything that a volunteer volunteer ' could. Meals on Wheels, driving disabled, disabled, phoning of anything anything they were asked for, all free. One of the couple approached a person and mentioned to her that you never know when you or someone in your family may need or appreciate the services provided. This person went to the store manager manager and complained of being hassled. He came out and ruined the taggers taggers day, maybe all week. Also last week we attended a birthday party for our second oldest granddaughter who has become a teenager-nowv - Coming home we passed a little turtle going the same'way we were, but on the wrong - side of the road. He must have thought he was in paradise to have such good walking with no grass, roots or twigs to trip him up.. I backed up and helped him down the steep bank. A couple of cars, each way, had to stop and they Had some unkind. words and ges- > tures for me. When we got underway underway again I heard my partner iinutter some-' thing about turtle lovers. Over the past fifty years We have had one of two other • disagreements which we have weathered weathered so maybe this will be the same. The Bob's Towing ThunderCars: Jim Remington's name has not been mentioned mentioned much this season, but the Peterboro resident resident has finally gotten his package together, the ... #8. Hadder's. Auto. Body Monte Carlo going Hag to flag for Remington's first ThunderCar feature win of the year. "It's taken us a long time to make the car work right, but now we can go play with the fast guys," declared the happy race winner. Sprinting into the lead from his pole position, position, Remington immediately immediately found his mirrors full of the #25 Zeebon's Sighs Chevy of Ome- mee's Dave Bishop. Distancing themselves from the pack, the top two were never more than two car lengths apart, running in station, Clean and Green to the checkered flag. Jeremy Gerrow (#23 Tryon Masonry) who had started started the 20 lap dash from mid-pack, closed to within two seconds of the leaders ut time ran out, the Lindsay-based driver settling for third place well ahead of John Baker Jr. and the #93 of Andy Ford. Donnie Beatty, the current points leader, saw his advantage over Gerrow "slip ' slightly," Beatty's 8th place finish in the feature allowing Gerrow to climb to within within 5 points of the overall points lead.
