Wednesday, August 16,2006 Ofono Weekly Times - 3 This week I went ot see two really different movies. First ,1 went to see Talladega Nights; The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. When I go to see a comedy, there are a few. things I look for and one thing is original material. I hate old recycled jokes. With Ricky Bobby the jokes are fresh, the story line is new, and Will Farrow is just excellent. ( He also helped write the story.) It was very funny. I really enjoyed this film. However, I wouldn't wouldn't take young children to see it as the jokes are rather suggestive--but suggestive--but it is a good watch. I give this the best rating of any comedy this year, a 4.5 out of 5. The other film I went to see was, The World Trade Center. Oliver Stone directed this film (Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon, Scarf ace, JFK and Midnight Express are also to his credit.) Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena are truly great in this film. I don't think any of us know what it is like to go to work everyday and put our lives on the line, unless we are on the Police Force, Fire Department, or in the Military. There is a unity and a oneness that we can't understand. I remember that day and how proud I was to see people pull together for good in the after effects of such evil. This is what really comes through in this film. Go see this film it will make you think. I give this film a 4 out of 5. Some entertaining videos to watch include: Inside Man, V for Vendetta, The Kid, The English Patient, and Michael. ■ ' . 'i ; . , - ;t 0 , , Harper Continued from page 2 years, that children are growing growing up parentless and homeless, homeless, that poverty and lack of education feed the cycle, one cannot but lament that the rich heritage "of peoples is being diminished, lost. A 'leader' is a reflection of his appreciation for protocol protocol and of his understandings of the significance of symbolic symbolic gestures. Mr. Harper's absence in the face. of crisis sends a profound message to Canadians and to the world about his priorities. Thus far, they have been in militariza tion, in cow-towing to hawkish hawkish American campaigns, and in the exploitation of our young soldiers in photo ops. While Rome burned, Nero fiddled. While the world tries to extinguish the flames of the AIDS crisis, Prime Minister Harper shies away by toddling off to the Arctic, demonstrating a heart as cold as ice. Clearly,-Mr. Harper is afraid to stand literally and metaphorically next to the face of AIDS. Kudos to Stephen Lewis for being a' leader among humankind! l Helen Bajorek MacDonald Newtonville, ON Durham Central Fair Parade Saturday, September qth ☆Entrants should line up at Orono Cemetery at 10:00am ☆Judging begins at 10:30am ☆Parade starts at 11:30am Float Categories: ★ Best Youth Group Float (15 years & under) ★ Best Neighbourhood Float ★ Best Family Float ★ Best Clown ★ Best Parade Theme Float ★ Bèst Musical Entry ★ Best School 1st Prize $40 ★ 2nd Prize $20 Lots of Prize money also, available for Decorated Bicycle (12 years and under) Non-Motorized Floats (12 years and under) Clowns NOTE :To be assured a spot in the'parade, you must PRE-REGISTER by Sept, 5th, by calling 905-983- 5750 or 905-983-5550' Opinion continued from page 2 monthly gas allowance exceeds $1,200! Just for an idea, $1,200 divided by the 47 cents per km (or worse) the rest of us get means that the mayor must drive over 2,500 km per month within Clarington, or roughly the distance to Florida. Add trips to Russia and China (with an entourage) at the taxpayer's expense. Flow' about a reserved reserved street parking spot for the mayor? Millions are spent on expensive outside consultants. Meanwhile the local taxes have gone through the, roof to fund these excesses. Mine are up over a thousand dollars. This outright abuse of office is nothing short of stealing and cheating on the taxpayers. On a moral level we have^ criminal charges against the mayor during this term of office. I wrote some recent letters to the Orono Times relating to Councillor Robinson's Robinson's use of farm plates on the same vehicle that he argues he needs for council and gets the huge gas allowance on. No good reply yet. I still have not received any facts on the money recently stolen from the Bowmanville Arena other than it's under control (ask your councillor about that-- it's a perfect example of council's belief the taxpayer is inherently stupid). The recent shouting down of Mrs. Racansky in her scheduled ten minutes of presentation to councillors about the tax increase was so ridiculous (and televised) that any councillor in that room that did not lift a hand to stop the mayor's juvenile tirade should have resigned by thé end of the week if they had any dignity (none stopped him). Sitting on your Corrections: In last week's front page article announcing Wendy Partner's candidacy for Ward 4 Local Councillor, we incorrectly incorrectly identified her as coming from Kendal. Wendy says, "I was raised and lived in Orono most of my life." We regret the error; Also, in the Greenbelt story, Clarington council did not vote unanimously against asking the province 1 to adjust the Greenbelt boundaries, as incorrectly stated in last week's front page story. Ward 1 and 2 Regional Councillor Jim Schell, who is Vice Chair of the Regional Planning Committee, voted with the majority of Regional 1 Councillors at their May 10th council meeting requesting the Province to remove four parcels of land from the Greenbelt. At the May 29th Clarington Council meeting, Schell, upheld his positon, and voted against Clarington's Planning Committee's report recomending the Greenbelt boundries remain in tact. In spite of this, most of the current councillors are singing one of two tunes: The first is my favourite: "Look at my track record". OK. Based on their track record, the town is heading for serious serious financial difficulties if we're stupid enough to reelect reelect the current crowd. Is it actually possible that the current current council thinks 200% raises and these tax increases are normal? The second tune is even stupider: "There have been mistakes--but give us a chance to fix it by re-electing us". Does anyone actually fall for this? I think "revenge" is the right word. You want to be re-elected? No. Maybe you should have thought about that when you were cheating. ./jane & lakp,y\ LUNN 25th Anniversary Drop in Saturday August 19 from 2-5 p.m. ■3452 Somerville Dr., Orono Best Wishes Only!
