According to Mrs. Gail Simpson, the VON Coordinator Coordinator for Volunteers Services, - Durham East, there is a waiting waiting list of seniors eager to enroll in the program, however, however, they still need volunteer exercise trainers. Volunteers go through a six day training session which is focused on the design and delivery of exercises and involves a mentorship program. program. There are no qualifications qualifications necessary to becoming a volunteer exercise trainer, says Simpson. "Trainers always have support and they are never left unattended," she stated. At the end. of the training sessions, volunteers become Certified Senior FitnessTnstructors through the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. Christine Bastmeyer from Beaverton has been volunteer ing as an in-home exercise trainer in north Durham since last Spring. In a phone conversation conversation with The Times last Friday, Bastmeyer explained how thorough her training program was and how she's encouraged by the progress her participants have made since she's worked with them. Through a regular exercise routine, her first client who had suffered a stroke and bound for a nursing home, has been able'to stay in her own home, Bastmeyer said. A senior who has always been active, Bastmeyer says she got involved in the program though an ad in her local paper. "I thought it sounded like something I would enjoy . doing," she stated. An active senior herself, Bastmeyer says she has learned a lot through the program, and it gives her an opportunity to do something something for-her community. Training sessions are being scheduled to begin in September September for both' in-home and group exercise programs. Seniors with a love for excer- cise are encouraged to call Gail Simpson at VON Durham at 1-800-263-7970 ext. 236. c ÉjUW&i&o(' 9 > eïennùds' May thru October MAJOR SUMMER SALE NOW IN PROGRESS 5467 Middle Rd.
