The bird was picked up on Wednesday, August 9 and submitted for testing to the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre in Guelph on August 10. This now brings the number number of positive birds in the Region to three as the Health Department reported two positive positive birds from Oshawa on August 1 and August 10. In addition, four pools (batches) of mosquitoes trapped during the week of August 8 have also tested pos- x itive for the vims. Two pools were from Ajax, one from Oshawa and one from Pickering, this now brings the number of positive mosquito pools in the Region to six. Previous positive mosquito pools from Oshawa and Ajax were reported on August 10. To date, the province reports 51 positive mosquito pools and 159 positive birds. "These positive test results indicate that West Nile vims is now widespread in the community," community," said Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region Medical Officer of Health. "Therefore, the likelihood of mosquitoes passing on the vims to humans is increasing. This reinforces the importance for all Durham Region residents to take precautions to protect themselves 1 against mosquito bites." So far this season, no human cases of WNV have been reported in Durham Region. The first confirmed case of WNV in the Region was recorded in September 2001 when a dead crow picked up in Wliiby on August 29th of that year tested posative for the virus WNV is a mosquito-borne disease that is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquit oes become infected by feeding feeding on the blood of a bird that carries the vims. The vims , is named after the West Nile region of Uganda, where it was first isolated isolated in 1937. The disease is not passed from person to person or from bird to person. Mosquitos feeding on birds infected with the WNV can transmit the virus to humans and animals when taking a blood meal. Most peple who become infected with WNV do not develop symptoms, or, if they do, they are vey mild. Symptoms appear three to 15 days following the bite of an infected mosquito and can range from a mild fever, headache and mild flu-like illness illness to rapid onset of severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, musle weakness and disorientation. disorientation.
