10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, August 30,2006 Change Continued from page 9 is a decision worthy of a beer store clerk raised to Mayor. This is usually accompanied accompanied by misinformation issued to customers (taxpayers), and let's call a spade a spade, knowingly issuing false information information is lying. Call it "Bearing False Witness" and' trace it back to the ten commandments. commandments. The problem basically stems to a lack of respect for your customers and stakeholders. Firstly, as any company knows, the more units you sell the cheaper each one gets in volume. Recently the members of council have been spouting such nonsense as "... As the town grows, we need more services, which causes taxes to rise". By this logic, Toronto should have taxes ten times what our taxes here are. My past experience is they are usually a little lower on comparable properties. properties. What the problem is that expenses always try to go up faster than income, and it is the board of directors responsibility responsibility to halt this trend, not to lie about its causes. It's a problem problem any company and most individuals have--Wants exceed Cash Flow. Then you have to make decisions as to which wants must be filled and which get deferred. In our case, we just hold the taxpayer taxpayer upside down and shake him harder - "must be more money here somewhere". But that's not management--it more resemblés a mugging. When you vote yourself an unreasonable raise during this time you have outright greed. Another perfect example of lack of respect for the taxpayers taxpayers occurs at council meetings. These are held in a public forum, often televised, and are for the benefit of the public. Any representative may make a presentation before the council, as long as they book it on Wednesday. On Friday the clerk's department releases the topics for Monday's meetings. Look at those time lines. On Friday you find there is an item on the agenda you want to address, but unless you were registered by Wednesday you cannot speak to council? This is democracy? And when you do speak to Council they feel it is their right to treat, you with hostility and public ridicule, much as they did to Mrs. Rancansky in her recent 10 minute presentation to council. I agree , with Luke Prout's recent article--any councillor who did not stand up' for her rights breached their trust and should resign immediately. I looked into the Arena issue that Luke men tioned as well. It appears a sum of money ($85,000 is often mentioned) was stolen from the Arena and the council council hushed it up by using a closed meeting to keep it from the press. Is this the behavior you want to continue to promote promote in your town? This sounds more like Enron than elected government. In summer 2004 the council council attempted to silence the Orono Times by illegally releasing personal, confidential confidential information relating to' the owner during a public council meeting. Our Mayor is currently facing two assault charges, but has yet to personally show up for court in spite: of three required hearing dates. Ethics appear to be sadly lacking on all councillors part but the voting voting of unreasonable personal raises has already adequately highlighted these deficiencies. deficiencies. Although the Mayor, like a company president, must be held personally responsible for the fiscal mismanagement and cultural degradation, he has not operated in a vacuum. We elected seven people in the last election, and any four can win a vote on any subject. In many cases, these people we voted to the board of directors have sat on their hands when they should have been managing managing their duties. Beyond any shadow of doubt they voted themselves huge raises and perks at a time they should have been practicing fiscal restraint. This is verifiable fact. Based on this issue alone they should be disqualified from any' consideration to be re-elected. They just don't get it. Their protection of the people people that'hired them has been sadly lacking, some by what they did, but most by what they did not do. The only solution in business business is to vote a new board of directors, lock, stock and barrel. barrel. All useless out, all new in. Leaving anyone behind allows the old culture to regain root, much like one bad apple will turn a whole barrel bad. The new council will have some troubles at first with loss of continuity, but this is better than preserving any part of the old board of directors policies and beliefs. You can't just throw six years of habit out-- it is unreasonable to expect the new council to properly operate operate when any of its members were raised in the kind of atmosphere the old council . believed was normal (hey-- let's all take 100% raises!). And of course, re-electing anyone is absolute agreement with the way they do things, so don't expect different results. Now don't get me wrong. I know a lot of these councillors on a personal level and they are all wonderful people. I do expect to lose some friends writing this article. My point is we don't need wonderful people--we need administrators, administrators, businessmen, leaders-- a strong board of directors will make a strong company, and a strong council will make a strong municipality. That will keep taxes down, protect our seniors, and make decisions based on public, need, .not personal want. As Clarington enters a period of high growth it becomes critical critical to put people who have nautical experience in charge of steering the ship and have the party crew go back to their cabins. More interesting details can be found on a local Blog site: claringtonwatchdog.blog spot.com / • Einstein quoted: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Unless you're happy with 100% pay increases and rising taxes, and can ignore the abuse of Mrs. Rancansky and others, logic would dictate that you must vote for someone that was not elected last time. If you don't, the same actions will lead to the same results.
