Wednesday, September 6,2006 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've done time by Clifford Francis r All is fair! Last week someone asked, how long had I been going to the Orono Fair? "Nearly 50 years," was my answer. When I was eleven and living living back in Pontypool, I attended the Fair for the first time. I came with a small fortune to the Fair; $2 or better, if I remember correctly, a lot of money anyhow. Walking down the old 35 Highway, some neighbour stopped to give me a ride, but when I reached the car the boy and. his old man drove off, leaving me standing there. They both had big smirks on their faces. On the way home that night I opened the gate and let their sheep out and drove them into the hills up near Burketon. They weren't smirking much after chasing their sheep for miles. That particular Fair, I dropped by at another farm along the way where I had helped a farmer and wasn't treated properly, or paid. There I lit his straw stack on fire as.my revenge. Mostly I remember all the fun times at the Orono Fair. Horse racing was a real highlight. highlight. Folks raced horses at the Fairs that weren't good enough to race at the regular tracks. Horsks were educated on the Fair tracks and lots of the local drivers got their first experience at driving at the Fair. I never drove much, but I did a little drinking. That was a good experience also. I was the first guy to ever. enter a miniature sheep at the Fair. When I was getting them ready to show I bathed them in water that was too hot and they shrunk. Hot water will do that to wool. I had the same kind of a mishap with my Angora rabbits. rabbits. When I was getting them ready for the Fair, I had them in an old steel washtub and I left the water hose running and ran in to answer the phone. When I came oiit they were both drowned. I knew they were prize winners. That year I went to the Fair and purchased the prize winning winning goose. I carried him around under my arm and proudly showed him off. The next year I took my little little Sheltie dog to the Fair. When I found out that there was no dog show I took my dog Foxy F. Francis over to the vegetable building and "borrowed" the first prize ribbon ribbon of the giant pumpkin and pinned it on Foxy's collar, ' Then I proudly told everyone tie had won first prize in the dog show that never was. Near the end of the day I took back the ribbon and the owner of the pumpkin was very indignant until I pointed out he was a lucky, lucky man to PLACES see page 5 Fay & Glory Adams Present - An Original x j^Sun.
