At the request of | Linda Gasseiy Claring- ton held public meetings I on the Greenbelt issue, but they were held, after Regional Council voted in favour of asking the Province to remove the lands. -. . . No one who spoke at those public meetings in Clarington were in support support of removing lands from the Greenbelt. Two of the four parcels of land the Regional Planning Committee wanted removed from the Greenbelt, were in Courtice. At that time councillor Schell did support the Region's request, stating it was a test of the Province's plan not to revisit the plan for 10 years. Since the Province said they would not take land out of the Greenbelt protection area, Regional Regional Planning Committee have . now indicated these lands as "Future Growth Areas" even through their own Planning Planning Department says the Region will not require any addition urban lands until at least 2031, if then. • The two parcels of disputed land in Courtice have been removed removed from "The Future Growth Areas' mapping, in accordance to recommendations made by Clarington's Planning Department, which were subsequently subsequently endorsed by council. • Following the meeting, meeting, Clarington's Linda, Gasser said, "Durham residents will have to remain vigilant through current municipal election election and through to next year's Provincial elections elections if they want to maintain a viable Green- ; belt and hold back the forces that would like to pave the Region from the Lake to the Moraine," stated Lindai . Gasser, who is a candidate candidate in Clarington's municipal election." ' "If you approve the Planning Committee recommendation(to include the Future Growth Areas), you will be delivering the very lifestyle most Durham residents came here to escape from in the first place., We still have unique, distinct communities communities in most municipalities, municipalities, both urban .and rural," stated Gasser at last Wednesday's Regional Regional Council ' meeting. . "If this Council's agenda to urbanize much of the five lakeshore municipalities municipalities prevails, our small villages and hamlets hamlets will not survive - they will be islands surrounded surrounded by à sea of cookie-cutter subdivisions." subdivisions." Mayoralty Candidate Richard Ward also addressed Regional Council last week asking asking them to leave the Greenbelt alone. Council also heard from David Donnelly, a lawyer representing the Greenbelt Alliance Ontario, Ontario, a group whose primary primary purpose is to defend and promote the health of the Greenbelt. In a press release issued by the environmental group last Wednesday, they state, "The members members of the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance condemn condemn the latest attempt by Durham Regional Council to allocate critical critical environmental and agricultural land in Ontario's Greenbelt and .urban •fringe for future development." r "Durham Council is playing politics, with nature by claiming these Greenbelt. acres are developable, but land next door on the Oak Ridges Moraine is sacred," sacred," said David Donnelly Donnelly in the press release. "People don't like politicians that fight over green space just because it was created by one party or another, . particularly when developers developers are cheering on the sidelines. Durham Councillors should stop playing games with nature and public health." Following the meeting, meeting, Gasser issued a press release in which she states, "Clarington and Durham residents should question municipal municipal candidates about their current and future positions on the Greenbelt and Future Growth Areas and whether or not they accept campaign donations donations from the development development industry." Gasser, Ward and Mayoralty candidate Jim Abemethy have declared declared publicly they will not accept campaign contributions contributions from developers. developers. BERRY AUCTIONS • 905-983-5787 We Salute Our Veterans We will remember "There have been several acquaintances wondering wondering and asking why I am so interested in researching our local military history. Sixteen years ago today, September 20th, 1990 at j 11:07am; while flying my new homebuilt them Osprey 2 amphibian aircraft from, Norman Rogers Airport (Kingston) to Deseronto at a thousand feet above ground level, suddenly, south of Napanee, Total Silence!! 'Engine Out' - Stalled! Spinning, into a twelve-foot com - field, which saved my life, but totally disintegrated the airplane. On regaining consciousness, calling a May-Day radio message that was heard by Japan Airlines 747 Captain Kenichi Ishikawa en-route from New York to Tokyo, Japan. Was rescued arid flown to Kingston by a Trenton based Air Rescue helicopter helicopter with; a crushed spine; four broken ribs (one in two places-punctured right lung), plus a broken shoulder. All injuries were internal, with no operations operations or stitches required. The initial six days in hospital were questionable, whether I would ever walk again. That time was spent pondering what I could do with my life from a chair - maybe write. On release from KGH. I being an ex: Canadian Naval Air, vowed to myself to research the past, who are only a 'name' on a cenotaph or memorial stone. Researching Lt. Hampton Gray VC. DSC. RCNVR. WTho, graduated with Wings, from Kingston Oct. 9,1940. The last awarded August 9,1945 'posthumously' the Victoria Cross, during World War II,. Followed by the research of twenty-five Commonwealth naval air pilot trainees, killed during training, interred in the Kingston Cemeteries, plus two never recovered from Lake Ontario. Next, was the research of Norman Rogers, Canadian Minister of National Defence, killed in an aircraft crash near Highway #2, at Newtonville, Ontario, June 1940. Then the research of the three Colville Bros. Alex. Bill and Sandy, all pilots in the RCAF. The only known three pilot brothers, who paid the Supreme Sacrifice in the Commonwealth. The Dedication of the Colville Clock Tower, Rotary Park, Bowmanville in June 1996. This all led to the naming of streets in the Municipality of Clarington, after the area, Veterans Killed in Action, of all wars. Begun in "The Year Of Our Veterans" October 2005.. Meaning to write a book on this subject, 'one day'--the list goes on-- Thank you, for any/all input, pictures are most welcome and helpful. Meaning to end this Fall, any I have missed I apologize and will try to include later. Thank you, Bill Calver
