Gathering Grannies hold gigantic garage sale for those struggling with HIV/Aids in Africa by Ann Harly and Melanie McArthur. Everything from antiques to apple pies were featured at the Gathering Grannies gigantic gigantic garage sale last Saturday. The weather co-operated and enthusiastic crowds turned out to the sale at the Lake in Newcastle, both as volunteers and as purchasers. As a result of the weekend initiative, initiative, $4,400 will be going to the Grandmother to Grandmother Grandmother Campaign which was fostered by the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Volunteers absorbed absorbed all the èxpenses, therefore therefore all proceeds raised are going to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) which was established in 2003 in an effort to ease the pain of individuals, individuals, families and communities communities struggling with HIV/AIDS in Africa. Stephen Lewis had been travelling as the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa for over two years and was devastated by the extent of human vulnerability and social, economic and personal carnage across the continent. This past August, the SLF held a conference in Toronto where Grandmothers from across Canada met with Grandmothers from 13 African countries to talk about what these African Grandmothers Grandmothers are experiencing and to dialogue about what Canadian Grandmothers can do to help. "The Community support for this sale is overwhelming", Melanie McArthur said as she finished making a sale of some books and records. The Newcastle Gathering Grandmothers Grandmothers first fundraiser in support of African women battling AIDS was off to a great start. McArthur had attended the prelude to the Stephen Lewis AIDS conference in Toronto that was the gathering of 200 Grandmothers from Africa matched by 200 Grandmothers from across Canada. After three days of discussion with these stalwart African women it became clear that there is a way to help with this seemingly unconquerable battle in Africa. These African Grandmothers Grandmothers explained they cannot do large projects but smaller more intimate works that help on an individual basis are just the type of thing a grandmother grandmother would do. These works include easing the plight of afflicted women; assisting orphans with school fees and food; supporting the grandmothers grandmothers who have already lost their own children and are now looking after their grandchildren; grandchildren; and they offer a variety variety of support to those courageous courageous men and women who have openly declared their infection with this disease. Melanie McArthur and the other local grandmothers are hoping that this giant yard sale will become an annual event to support the African Grandmothers Grandmothers in their work. ~ Happenings ~ Wednesday.
