Thus, next year will the village's village's terquasquicentennial, or 175th anniversary. From Helen Schmid's book, Out of the Mist we leam that in 1832 three settlers; Dennison Douglas, Asa Baldwin and Eldad John came to the present site of Orono where they had purchased lots. A hundred years later, the village of Orono celebrated their centennial, which was to offer a 'sparkling four day program program of events,' comemmorat- ing one hundred eventful years, according to publisher Mr. Sam Cuttell in the June 23rd, 1932 edition of the Orono News. It appears that Orono has a history of celebrating the beginning of settlement, rather than, recognizing the date it became a village. Looking through back issues of the local newspaper, that 1932 centennial was the last milestone anniversary celebrated celebrated by this village. As Orono was constituted as a village in 1855, the year 1955 marked the centennial of that date, and the year 2005 the sesquicentennial anniversary, however, both of these significant significant dates went by unnoticed and thus uncelebrated in the village. Orono was constituted as a Police Village, the Police -Trustees decided to go ahead with plans to incorporate the village. It was reported in the Orono Weekly Times of November 10, 1955, a previous previous attempt in 1954 to incorporate incorporate the Village was turned down by the County Council. Petitions in 1955 in. favour of incorporation represented about 75 percent of the ratepayer^ ratepayer^ In the December 1st paper of that year it was. reported that, 'as it has been legally estab lished under the Municipal Act that the Police Trustees do not have the power to execute this request, be it therefore resolved that this Board of Police Trustees take no further action regarding the said motion." Trustees then went on to discuss the question of where in the Municipal Building the 66 Orono celebrates the 175th Anniversary of its settlement" --under the auspices of Clarington Museums public toilets should be places. The 1932 centennial celebration celebration was a grand affair by all accounts. The July 7th Orono News states, "Thousands of former former citizens return to familiar scenes. Well-formed arches built of evergreens, strung with streamers bearing words of welcome spanned, the main thoroughfares, while stores, shops and other business places and residences were lavishly decorated with flags and bunting and everywhere the glad hand and welcome smile was in evidence." The June 30, July 1,2 and 3,1932, weekend in Orono included musical features, features, drama, a historical parade, sports and light entertainment entertainment with a monster religious religious service in the open air concluding the weekend. The main thoroughfares were lined on Saturday afternoon with a large crowd to watch the Trades and Calithumpian Parade. A celebration of the 175th anniversary of the settlement of Orono, every bit as grand as the centennial celebration is being planned for Canada Day weekend weekend 2007. Organization of this event is spearheaded by the Clarington Museums through their administrator Martha Rutherford. A public meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, January 10, 7 p.m. at the Orono Town Hall, to form organizing committees for the various events planned for the weekend.
