The years have not been too hard on the Orono bus shelter which will be relocated to Main Street from the former Forestry property when the Orono bus loop becomes a reality. reality. Newcastle BIA loan forgiven With the forgiveness forgiveness of a $6,900 loan by the Municipality the books on the Newcastle Millennium Parkette are now closed. The Newcastle Business Improvement Association spearheaded the Millennium Park Project, on the property on the west side of the Newcastle Community Centre in 2000. The total cost of the Parkette project which included a gazebo, interlocking brick walkways, benches, benches, gardens and a water fountain was $134,395. The Federal government approved a millennium grant application made by the BIA for 1/3 of the cost of the Parkette providing providing the group raised an additional 1/3 and had a solid fund-raisng plan for the remaining 1/3 of the cost. In January 2000 the Municipality of Clarington gave the Newcastle group a $25,000 grant for the project and an interest free loan of $66,210. The BIA paid back $59,240 of the loan and in a verbal request through Councillor Charlie Trim asked that the remaining $6,970 be written off. Councillor Trim brought forward the motion to forgive the outstanding loan at Monday night's council meeting, which passed unanimously. Councillor Trim stated at the meeting that the public did become involved and donated funds to the parkette, but the group where hoping for a couple of Newcastle developers to contribute to the project and that didn't happen. The Newcastle community community is now involved in a fundraising effort to pay back an other interest free loan from the municipality municipality for renovations to their arena. "The BIA in Newcastle were able to raise $60,000," stated Councillor Jim Schell at Monday's council meeting. meeting. "The park is a real gem in the village of Newcastle. If our municipality municipality ends up paying $6,000, it's a paltry sum." WH&EfiQOS I MIX It's a fact that many fire deaths are caused by people attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol. There's more to responsible drinking than taking a cab. Don't put yourself- dHWj or your family- at risk to fire. ^ mm|1B--m mmÊ --B(1IB1MII
