January 3rd and 8th saw them play a home-and-home series with Newcastle and come out on top in both games. In Orono, the Leafs out- scored Newcastle 5-0. Martin scored the shutout and goals came from Millson (unassisted), Price (unassist ed), Millson (from Dunham and Sutton), Dunham (from Szymczak and Millson), and Millson (for the hat trick from Szymczak). On the 8th, the Orono team traveled to Newcastle, and even though the Stars played hard, they were still outmatched. Orono's players skated away with a 5-1 victory. Crashley took the win and Orono's scorers scorers were Barnes (from Caruana), Szymczak (from Millson), • Millson (from Sutton), Barnes (unassisted) and Barnes (for the hat trick from Moore and Cox), The Leafs ended the regular season at home against the Beaverton Blades. Orono had played this team in the season opener and tied them 4-4. This game was a different story as the Leafs came out on top by a score of 8-0. However, tournaments have been a different story as this team has suffered heartbreaking heartbreaking losses in both tournaments they have competed in. This past weekend, the Leafs travelled to Mooretown for the Juvenile Silver Stick Championships. Orono opened the tournament Friday morning versus Wingham. The iboys started out slow and found themselves trailing 1-0 at the end of the opening period. They quickly turned things around early in the second as Mark Lemieux got Orono on the board assisted by Ricky Howe and Aaron Robinson. Just a few minutes later, the Leafs grabbed the lead as Jamie Parry sprung Scott Wood free on a breakaway and he put it home for a 2-1 lead. Lemieux added his second of the game from Chris Field to give Orono a 3-1 lead. Wingham pulled within one but late in the third, Ricky Howe .snuck behind the defence and'made no mistake on the breakaway to seal a 4-2 win. In their second game Friday, Orono faced a tough team from Mildmay. Ricky Howe opened the scoring early in the second period, scoring on yet another breakaway. Orono held the 1-0 lead until late in the game when Mildmay scored twice to take a 2-1 victory. Saturday morning, Orono needed a win in their final round-robin game to advance to the semi- finals. They faced Sarnia and jumped all over them to start the game. However, they could not find the net and midway through the second, Sarnia gave the boys a scare taking a 1-0 lead. Orono tied it up late in the second as Colin Organ blasted a point shot into the net assisted by Zach Ibbotson and Mike Trotman. In the third period, the Orono offensive attack started to roll as they potted four unanswered goals to grab a 5-1 lead. Chris Field started the attack of a great pass from Ricky Howe. Minutes later, Orono delivered on the power play as Scott Wood scored off a Colin Organ point shot. Ricky Howe had the other assist. Howe then scored one of his own just 15 seconds later assisted assisted .by Wood. Jamie Parry rounded out the scoring going end to end assisted by Colin Organ. Final score 5-1. This meant that Orono would lace Mildmay once again in a win ner takes all semi-final. Orono opened the scoring in this game as Phil Fracz roofed one from Chris Field and Jamie Parry. Mildmay tied things up early in the second and it stayed this way until the third. Aaron Robinson put Orono ahead 2-1 on the power play early in the third period from Zach Ibbotson and Chris Field. Orono held the 2-1 lead until Mildmay scored a crushing goal with just over a minute to play in the game. This sent the game to sudden death overtime. overtime. Nothing was decided after the first ten minutes ofOT so they went to a second OT period where Mildmay scored a controversial offside goal to take the win and eliminate Orono. Scott Poole and Chris Wood were outstanding in goal throughout the entire tournament tournament for Orono. The team showed a tremendous amount of heart and courage playing tireless minutes due to a short- staffed roster and battling through painful injuries. Congratulations on a job well done. -SW Novice focus on playing positions The Stutt's Pharmacy Novice Leafs lost 4-1 in Bowmanville on Saturday. Maria Ferren scored for the Leafs on a one-on-one breakaway, breakaway, assisted by linemates Kristian Walker and Mitchell Canfield. Bowmanville #4 tied it up half way through the second second period. The Leafs concentrated concentrated on playing their positions, positions, however they were running running out of steam. Bowmanville scored three more goals in the last seven minutes to end the game 4*1. It was a great effort by all. Tyler Rich played excellent goal for the second time this year. Connor MacVarish was excellent in net making some great saves. Chris Haas opened the scoring, assisted by Josh Gallina after a beautiful beautiful through-the -legs drop pass from Ian Third. Motor City answered with two goals. The second period saw Chris Haass score unassisted and Motor City score another three. In the third, Motor City scored two more and Chris Haass completed his third hat trick of the season, assisted by Josh Gallina. The final score of 7-3 does not reflect the improvement of the Easton players. Everyone gave a great effort. The next game is Friday night in Orono. •VH
