Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 15,2003 - 7 ; ^ Bantams battle snow and flu Orono Euchre Nights Millbrook made their way to Orono on December 5th for an exhibition game. Orono's UPI walked away with a great 3-4 win. Both teams managed points in each period but Orono slammed an extra one home in the second period. Matt Rester netted the first one, assisted by Dan Reilly up from Justin Westerink. The second second point was earned by Devon Robinson, assisted by Doug Deboo up from Brien Konopka. The next 2 goals went to Andrew Kirkbride, assisted by Josh Flynn and Brien Konopka up from Mike Hicks and Matt Rester. Net duties were split between goalies Alex Hart and Shane Winters. Friday December 6: Highland Storm came to Orono for a 9pm game. Mike Hicks was the only point-earner for the UPI Bantams with a great unassisted goal in the last UPI won the first on December 19 in Millbrook, 2-1. Millbrook scored at the 8 minute mark in the first period. UPI came back and tied it up with 3 minutes left in the first period. Nick Fallis managed the point unassisted. UPI held the opposing team off and managed another point, this time by Josh Flynn, also unassisted. unassisted. The second game, on Janaury 12 in Orono, resulted in another win for Orono. Netminder Alex Hart had his first shut out of the year. Orono put 4 points on the board. Two were by Mike Hicks - one unassisted unassisted and the other assisted by Matt Rester - and the other pair were by Andrew Kirkbride, assisted by Devon Robinson and Justin Westerink. On December 29, Orono played Beaverton in a onesided onesided game. Orono played hard but were unable to manage more than one point the entire game. Doug Deboo earned that point, assisted by Justin Westerink. The final score was 8-1 for Beaverton. On January 9 Orono made their way through a snowstorm to play Ops. It was worth it. Orono's UPI walked away with a win. Doug Deboo started the scoring off assisted by Mike Hicks up from Matt Rester. The second goal was right off the face off. Scott Henderson slipped it back to Brien Konopka, who put it across to Justin Westerink, who then slammed it past the Ops net minder. This tied the game up at 2-2. Ops managed another point in the first and one in the second. second. However, Matt Rester bagged the next point assisted by Mike Hicks. Then Nick Fallis got a break away and popped one in with 10 minutes left on the clock. Final score: 4-2 for Orono. -BH minute of the second period. Highland managed one in the first period and one in the second second period. Although both teams worked hard, the entire 3rd period was scoreless. Final score: 2-1 for Highland. Saturday December 14: Orono went to Omemee for a 4:30 game. The bench was' short due to the flu bug and suspensions. The first period ended with UPI ahead 3-1. The goals were earned by Cam Delorme, Justin Westerink and Devon Robinson. The short- handed UPI squad ran out of steam and the Omemee team racked up some more points. Final score of the game: 9-3 for Omemee. Orono Bantams were glad to see Coach George in good health and back on the bench. In the last month, UPI has had two games against Newcastle, one a win for Newcastle and the second a 3-3 tie. The first game was played on December 17 in Newcastle. The final score was 6-1 for Newcastle. Devon Robinson earned the lone Orono point, assisted by Dan Reilly. The second game was played in Orono on January 5th. Newcastle netted the first point, but Orono was quick to follow with a point of their own. Andrew Kirkbride scored, assisted by Mike Hicks up from Josh Flynn. Orono was in the lead with two more points on the board at the end of the second. This time, goals went to Devon Robinson and Dan Reilly, both assisted by Andrew. Orono, however, couldn't keep up the pace. Newcastle tied it up in the third. UPI played two games against Millbrook. First plate Atoms end season with a "doozy The Country Cafe Atom Rep team ended their regular season season on Fridày with à 3-2 win against the Highland Storm. The highly anticipated game with the Storm was a "doozy" Both teams played very well and the game featured plenty of action at both ends of the rink. Even though the Storm took two quick goals, the Cafe Crew kept working hard and stayed with the game plan, which resulted in plenty of skating and some nice passing plays. Spencer Cole was finally rewarded. He went in all alone and Sean Bargent fed Cole a beauty pass at the Highland blueline and Spencer made not mistake blowing it by the Storm goalie. Shortly after Cole's marker, Greg St. James scored a nifty goal as he snuck out from behind the net to tuck one between the goalie's legs. The goal was a short-handed'effot and this ignited the Orono boys. The next line out was Chris Kuijpers, Jesse Desourdy and Chris Lunn. They kept the momentum going. Some hard work and nice passing resulted in a great goal from Chris Lunn who finished off a nice pass from Desourdy. Orono held on for a 3-2 win and ended a fantastic season - 23 wins, 1 loss and one tie. The team ended in first place overall. overall. The defense of Eddy Meester, Adam Duke, Ty Simpson, Ty Middleton and Stosh Fabricius did a fantastic job all night and goalies Ryan Brandt and Patrick Rempel responded with some key saves at the right time. Fred's Autobody Bantams foreclose on bank in 4-3 win On January 9, Fred's Autobody Bantams squared off with Di's Pizza in an exciting Orono vs. Orono exhibition game which ended in a 3-3 tie. Paul Brownell made the start in net and was sharp. William Huebert opened the scoring with a blast from the blue line. Cory Veloce scored the second assisted by Matt Smit. Leading the way was Jacob Dolley who was red hot in both games posting back-to-back shut-outs. On Friday, Orono hosted Cannington and came away with an impressive 6-0 victory. Picking up one goal each were Tyler Meijer, Matt Verkuyl, Zachary Gibson, Evan Rosseau, Tyler Balson and Tyson Robinson. Michael Richards had a good game picking up three assists with Dylan Dennis, Stefan Fabricius, Corey Peters, Tyson Robinson and Zachary Gibson picking up one assist each. On Sunday, Orono travelled to Manvers and played a solid game, winning 4-0. Tyson Robinson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Evan Rosseau scored the second goaf assisted by Tyler Balson.
