■( 4 Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 22, 2003 ; }■ Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis f Iron Horse Photo Charlie Reid Breeder/Owner (R) and Paul Shakes Trainer/Owner (C) received the Breeder's Award for the 2002 Ontario Sires Stakes for the two-year-old trotting colt Meàdowview Sunny. The award was presented at dinner in Cambridge last Saturday by Master of Ceremonies Frank Salive (L) In good hands Times change more so than towns. Orono has basically stayed the same for 50 years or so. People all seem worried about our volunteer fire department. Its fine. I say the truck got there before and it will get there again. Not to worry. Years ago, most all our volunteer volunteer firefighters worked right in the village. People like Ross Mercer, Gerald Duvall and Gord Watson just to name a few. Maybe next time there is a drive for volunteers, they should solicit the local shop owners, there are several people people who come to mind. Transportation seems to be another issue. I may be able to solve that. On the weekend I was in Toronto and had an opportunity to visit the Toronto Transit Commission Yard where they keep the older buses and streetcars that are no longer in service. One streetcar streetcar would serve the village. If the land at the Comer of Main and Station was purchased, the Candidates Continued from front Pingle (Ward Three) and Don Mac Arthur (Ward Two) intend to seek re-election in their current capacity as is Ward 1 and 2 Regional Councillor Jim Schell. Ward One local councillor Jane Rowe is the only member member of the current council who has yet to declare her intentions intentions for the upcoming election. election. On Monday, Rowe would not declare whether she would run again and if so, for what position. She doesn't want her actions to be judged on the fact that she is seeking re- election. She's attending functions and representing the Municipality as an elected official, not because she's looking for votes. "I'm not doing things because it will get me votes," stated Rowe on Monday. "It's business as usual." Mayor John Mutton filed his nomination papers with the Clerk's office on January 2nd, and is looking to be elected for a second term as Mayor of Clarington. Candidates have till October 26th, 2003 to 11 le their nomination papers. streetcar could be parked there. Klaas Schoenmaker lives just across the road, maybe he could drive it. It's something to think about. Getting transportation out of town has never been a problem. problem. Over the years I have travelled all over Canada and the USA with no problem and I never drove a mile. Getting a ride back into the village, well that was a different situation. This is election year and I've been thinking about that. Early in the year I heard a rumour that I was going to be given the position of 'official warner' for the village of Orono. The job would consist of warning skateboarders about boarding in the downtown downtown area, warning people who park too long and such. I would not have to issue tickets. tickets. For a modest fee I would gladly do these jobs as well as several others which would include picking up the newspapers newspapers that are thrown in every doorway, alley and driveway twice a week in the downtown area. If I do run for mayor, I will still vote for Mayor Mutton,--he does a good job. To run for council is more dif ficult, it's very tricky sitting on the fence, and I might tip off. And talking out of both sides of my mouth, that's hard also. Oh, something else before I forget, people are always seeing seeing things and never I. However, this week I saw a couple of coots north of Orono. On Sunday I saw three loons south of the Mill Pond. I wonder if they were locals or just there for the day. I must ask John Slater--he would know.
