Qrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 5,2003 - 6 Volleyball skills showcased at tournament Newcastle came out on top at the annual Clarke ASG Junior Volleyball, Tournament Thursday, but Kirby was a close second. Newtonville, Kirby, Orono and Newcastle submitted two teams each to the event, hosted by Newcastle. The teams were made up of students in grades four to six. Newcastle's competitive team only lost one game in the round NEWCASTLE BOWLING THURSDAY MIXED score results 175 + for Thurs., January 30 robin, and that was to Kirby. But when the two top teams, Newcastle and Kirby, spurred off against each other at the end of the day Newcastle defeated Kirby 25-16 in the first game and 25-22 in the second. Dee Gannon, Newcastle's coach, was impressed with the quality of the play. "There were a lot of rallies, it was really good volleyball," said Gannon. "The skill level has definitely improved since last year." Lisa Dunn, coach of the Kirby team, voiced the same opinion. "I was so impressed with the team. Some kids did things they didn't know they could do! They would turn to me and say, 'Did you see what I just did?' Another girl said, 'I'm so excited my knees are shaking!"' shaking!"' They have played five games, winning four and tying one. The team is playing playing with a lot of enthusiasm, skill and dedication. The offensive line of Dustin Armstrong, Andrew Fudge and Johnathen Picco has exploded, scoring more than twenty points for the team this month. This was highlighted by . a hat trick from Andrew Fudge in a 5-1 victory for Orono. The line of Denis Beenen, Jamie Stevens and Matt Fuller have displayed smart defensive work while at the same time generating scoring chances for Orono. David Gray. Sam Leggott and Tyier Skelton make up Orono's other offensive line that has shown excellent forechecking forechecking resulting in several goals for the team. The defense pairings of Brock McGill and Kenny Jackson, Michael Whelan and Wade Clarke and Kevin Bourke and Jesse Rice have cut down the amount of shots faced by Michael Hisson, while also contributing several goals. Michael is to be congratulated on his shutout in a 4-0 victory for Orono. The overall improvements of the team have led to Orono outscoring their opponents twenty-three to, seven. Easton Major '-1 On Friday night, the Tykes played Hunter Sports Photography. Hunter Sports scored twice and then Chris Haass scored for Easton's to narrow the lead. The game remained close until late in the third period when Hunter Sports scored three quick goals to end the game 5-1. Josh Kelly played well in net for Easton's.
