Durham Region Health Department reports the following following number of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome SARS cases as of April 15, 2003: • 8 probable cases • 9 suspect cases • 6 cases currently under investigation • 120 individuals under quarantine • 1074 individuals dis charged from quarantine to date Seven days prior, the numbers were: • 7 probable cases • 8 suspect cases • 4 cases under investigation • 89 individuals under quar antine • 916 individuals discharged from quarantine to date Health Department staff are also following up with numerous contacts that have been identified as they receive of 300 calls a day regarding the SARS outbreak. Effective March 31, the Health Department has suspended suspended all non-essential services services and is concentrating all efforts on the SARS outbreak. As of April 21st there are more than 3800 SARS cases worldwide with 217 deaths. In Canada, there arc 177 suspect cases and 139 probable. probable. The majority of these cases are in Ontario with 124 suspect and 135 probable includidng 14 deaths. The highest number of cases are in China which reports 1,959 probable cases including 86 deaths. The U.S. is reporting 39 probable cases with no deaths. The Region of Durham's Health Department has increased their staff, the number number of incoming phone lines and expanded hours of operation operation to address increased number number of calls; expanded hours arc 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., seven days/wcek. Kendal man charged with assault and arson A twenty-nine year old Kendal man is awaiting bail hearing following several charges laid against him in on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. The village of Kendal watched as Police and Fire responded to a 911 call placed at approximately 10:45 p.m. concerning a bam fire at 47 Old Mill Street, Kendal. While firefighters from Orono, Newcastle and Bowmanville attended to the blazing building which was totally engulfed in flames by the time they arrived, police responded to a disturbance up the street on the front porch of 62 Old Mill Street. Officers noted a strong smell of gasoline on the male on the porch as they arrested him for the assault of his common common law wife. Police say alcohol was a factor in these events. The fire caused approximately approximately $50,000 damage to the two story barn owned by Wm. Little which was being used as a garage. No one was hurt from the fire, however the female received minor injures during the assault. Shane David Hawke faces charges of, Assault with a Weapon which was piece of furniture, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Arson-- Damage to Property and Threatening.
