Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 30,2003 - Bowmanville Museum Spring Spree Open House The Bowmanville Museum is celebrating spring with their Spring Spree Open House May 2, from 7-9 p.m. A local wineiy will be offering tastes of their fine Durham region wines along with a selection of cheeses. À local artist will provide provide musical entertainment. On display in the Marion Shepherd Continued from page 2 the local group said all changed. There are no partners and they are back to asking both the federal federal and the provincial governments governments for support. Now they are asking for $1.2 billion from the federal government. government. There is no question that if ITER was sited here this money would be easily returned to the treasury in terms of increased taxes etc. But there is an inherent liability liability which is if another country was chosen to host ITER then Canadian taxpayers' money would be going to that country. Unfortunately many do not understand the nature of international international science. Bringing ITER to the region has been treated like some kind of Olympic bid. The difference is if you lose an Olympic bid you simply lost the money to make the application. application. If you lose ITER you are committed to paying for 30 years. Some will argue this is still a good investment and they may well be correct. I want to stress that locally the ITER project has become a political football. And politics * has never been my strong point if it means political posturing. While I have lobbied the Prime Minister, all of the cabinet, led parliamentary delegations to the Wiseman Gallery at the Museum, is the Earl Pascoe Clock Collection. The Pascoe Collection features over 80 unique time-pieces from all over the world. Of particular note are three clocks from the Canada clock Company (Whitby and Hamilton) and. a Swiss Brothers Post Office EU and have been instrumental in getting ITER Canada interim funding, local politicians are going aroimd saying I'm doing nothing. In two and one-half years I have never had a phone call from the local municipalities asking what the federal governments governments current position on ITER is. It occurs to me that the local game is that, if for some reason local politicians who have not been very active on the file fail to deliver the project, then they can blame me and the federal government. Or, if the project does come to Durham, they can claim some sort of victory for prodding the federal government. government. Now, at the 11th hour, there is a plethora of letters being written and the public is being encouraged to travel to Ottawa and take part in a demonstration to show tire Prime Minister and Cabinet that they better support this. It all seems odd to me especially especially since I have never been asked to take part in this or help to get the meeting with the Prime Minister. ITER is too important to let personal feelings get in the way of bringing the project to the region and all the economic benefits our citizens will gain from it. I will continue to do what I Clock made of all wooden parts in the 1830's. An interesting addition to the display from the Bowmanville Museum collection collection is the retractable gold toothpick once held by Diamond Jim Brady. Admission is free. Together we can put our best foot forward, forward, together we can show the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the world that Durham Region is the best place to cany on ITER research for the next 30 years. O'Toole Continued from page 2 act now. ITER gives Canada the opportunity to secure 68,000 person-years of employment and $9.4 billion in foreign investment. More importantly, this is Canada's chance to be at the forefront of a new, state-of- the-art energy research facility that will make our nation a world leader in energy and scientific scientific research. The proposed site in Clarington has always been a front-runner for the next phase of fusion energy research. Early in the process of bidding for ITER, Ontario promised $300 million in support of the Canadian bid. However, we are facing tough international competition, and it's clear that it will take a renewed effort from the provincial and federal federal governments if Canada is to stay in contention.
