A time to focus on what your mom did right, and to show her how much you appreciate all her love and devotion. Anna Jarvis, a teacher, who never married, is credited with starting the 'Mother's Day' celebration in America in 1908. Very much attached to her own mother, she was terribly terribly distraught when her mother died in 1905. She looked around at her students, who still had their mothers and felt bad that they did not seem to appreciate them enough. So she started a successfuHetter writing campaign to congress to call for a special day to honour moms, hoping that the day would increase respect for parents and strengthen family family bonds. | The Orono Times went to the streets to find out what area residents appreciated most about their moms. Here's what they said: Cynthia Jaspers-Fayer, 33, of Orono: "She's a very, very, very good listener and she always makes you feel better if you have a problem. problem. You can always talk to her about anything." Paul Coutts, 22 of Newcastle: "She's a hard worker, she puts up with a lot of stuff. She does a lot of things for us and doesn't ask a lot in return. We love our mom." Yvonne Maitland, of Orono, "She's almost angelic; she has this capacity capacity to be so kind and loving to everyone. She's just like that. I love my mom." Neil Williamson, 20, of Orono, "She's always there. I can always talk to her.
