A destination with a difference You are invited to a Community Forum on the future of Orono. The forum will include a brainstorming session designed to identify the short and long term issues facing this community. The 'no growth' designation that this community lives with, and the resulting strain this places on existing businesses businesses have been discussed on more than one occasion on these pages. The lack of a municipal sewage system is seen as both a blessing and a curse by lobai residents. While those that live and work here know it's the best place in the world to be, we seem to be suffering from an identity crisis. The feeling among the business community is that the slogan, slogan, "The Village With. A Difference" isn't cutting it anymore. anymore. While no.one can quite say what that 'difference is', the local attitude is, 'if you have to ask, you don't need to know'. There is a movement underfoot to present Orono as a tourist destination. Apparently the highway signs depicting Sid Rutherford in deep thought, smoking his pipe beside the Second Flume, (easily mistaken for a large sewage pipe by visitors) apparently apparently doesn't present the image that will get today's tourists swinging off the highway in droves. The idea of a Community Improvement Plan will be introduced introduced at this forum. The community's interest and participation participation in this Improvement Plan is being solicited. Come on out, be a part of the process, have your say. The Forum will be held at the Orono Town Hall on Wednesday June 18, at 7:30 p.m. The Forum is a combined effort of the Orono BIA, the Clarington Board of Trade and the Municipality of Clarington. r www.dollghan.coni AS I S 66 It ...by Peter Jaworski The Choices Made (Part 1 of a series) This past weekend was full of political machination. If you were amongst those watching the federal Progressive Conservative leadership convention, you would have been witness to the sorts of deal-making, backroom swindling, and intrigue that so often mars leadership elections. That wasn't me, mind you. I didn't bother to turn on the television. I don't get fired up by the personality-driven events these things typically turn out to be. Like a few Canadians here and there, I'm a bit more interested in the content of the policy documents documents from which these leaders leaders derive their 'vision,' as it were. Well it turns out that 1 made something of a mistake, This past weekend's politicking politicking was rife with policy consequences. consequences. In securing the leadership, Peter MacKay signed some kind of contract with David Orchard. A contract that, according to the National Post, commits MacKay's Conservatives to a review of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), eliminates the possibility of collaboration with the Canadian Alliance for the next election, and to making agriculture agriculture and the environment top planks in the election platform. platform. Some background: NAFTA was signed by the Brian Mulroney-led Tories in 1988. A significant segment of the federal Tories consider this to be the hallmark of the Mulroney years, a hallmark that made the GST disaster easier to swallow. Meanwhile, David Orchard resides on interesting political ground. He was opposed to the Free Trade Agreement, is much more isolationist, and is probably more in line with the JAWORSKI continued page 3 Letters to the Editor Orono BIA seeks new vision for downtown Dear Editor, At the last meeting of Orono's BIA a new topic was discussed--the development of Orono's downtown image. What do we see ourselves as? What is the future focus for our village? Orono is a lovely busy village village with a long history of community groups working towards the future. I have heard the stories of how the original pool was hand dug by local people. 1 have witnessed the community pull together to help keep our library. We have enjoyed years of strong Athletic Association that organizes sport teams and fund raises for our youth. I have not even mentioned the Horticultural Society, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, our two churches, the Crown Lands and many, many others. Orono is now being asked to create a plan for our business district's future. Wc all have different concerns concerns and sec different things ahead. This is a chance for the village to get together and to put these ideas on paper, form a round table discussion BIA continued page 5 "...not given to hero worship" Dear Editor, Congratulations on the fine editorial in last week's Orono Times. You blended the old and new perfectly and finished finished off with a great comment. comment. One of my favourite quotes is from Gordon Donaldson, who wrote; "Canadians are not given to hero worship. This deprives them of some of the trappings of National identity and gives the totally false impression that history is dull". Thanks again for all your support of the recital. All the best, Myno VanDyk. Newcastle
