§®jofto Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 4,2003 - 6 PONTYPOOL MEN'S SUNDAY LOB BALL LEAGUE Kendal Juniors bounce back in Barrie double-header The Kendal Juniors got their regular season underway Saturday, May 17 in Kendal versus Ajax. Starter Bob Witheridge pitched well for the Royals but defensive mistakes mistakes and a lack of offence came back to haunt Kendal. A late charge fell short and Ajax took the game, 5-3. The home-and-home series ended in Ajax on Sunday. Nick Stacey hurled a solid four innings before the game was suspended ■ due to light failure. The Kendal Juniors played a double header in Barrie on Monday, May 19. In the first game, Kendal again had defensive lapses and an almost absent offence saw the Royals take a pounding, 9-0. It was a different story in game 2. Kendal scored twice in the top of the first and then Barrie came back to tie. As the game went on, the teams exchanged one run each. With Barrie threatening in the bottom of the sixth, the Kendal defence tightened up, sparked by a great diving catch by Jesse Robertson. In the top of the seventh inning, Kendal's bats exploded exploded for 4 runs giving them the lead heading into Barrie's final at-bat. Kendal pitcher Brendan Davidson shut the door in the bottom of the seventh seventh preserving his complete game win. -TK Auto-pitcher adds zip to Rookie Baseball A pitching machine may be just the ticket to keeping baseball baseball a popular pass-time for area youth. Novice hitters who face perfect pitches are apt to gain quick confidence and come to enjoy the game. And as the new Rookie Ball manager Christine Robinson explains, if kids don't learn to love the sport early, they won't play the game in later life. A Rookie Ball League with six teams was established this summer in the Durham/ Northumberland area under the guidelines of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association. The home team for Port Hope/Kendal/Garden Hill has thirteen boys aged 8 and 9 who made the cut. While fast-paced soccer and lacrosse continue to win over parents who see their children getting a real workout, workout, baseball loses supporters when it is seen as slow. The pitching machine is an excellent aid to getting things moving, Robinson, notes. With pitches coming in consistently over the plate at 35-50 mph there are definitely going to be more hits, better hits, and fewer walks between bases. Also, with the pitching machine, the games are less drawn out, which is another Celling point for busy parents who simply can't spend over three hours a night at the ballpark. ballpark. The Rookie Ball League already has plenty of keen supporters including former Toronto Blue Jay Paul Quantrill from Port Hope. Games go seven innings in two hours and batters get five chances to hit. The Rookie Ball team for Port Hope/Kendal/Garden Hill includes boys from Hampton, Orono, Cobourg, Kendal, Port Hope and Garden Hill. -LM Orono Country Cttfe ^ V?
