f Dear Old Dad Qrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 11,2003 - 5 As Father's Day approaches, approaches, the inevitable phone calls start among my siblings about what to get dad for his big day. Over time we have found that a coordinated effort works best being he has nine children and at this point nineteen grandchildren--with one on the way. As with all holidays, the media and retail market have made the expected choices bigger and more expensive. We have succumbed to the pressure and have happily given him everything from trips to a large screen TV with all the bells and whistles. It turns out that some of his favorites gifts are the handmade handmade pencil holders and pictures pictures frames and believe it or not a Rubiks Cube. For years he would play with that thing and just drive himself crazy trying to get it right time after time. Once done, he would leave it out and as expected someone else would pick it up start playing with it and leave it all screwed up again. He would come home from work and be challenged to make it right - again. My dad was born in 1927. His dad was a butcher in New York and his mom died giving him birth. For a while he was raised by relatives and was reunited reunited with his dad when grandpa remarried. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific until the end of WWII. After his discharge, discharge, he went to school on the GI Bill and received his under-graduate degree from the University of Miami. He met and married my mom, a teacher, and continued with New York Law School in Manhattan. As luck would have it, they were both very Catholic, hence the nine kids almost in a row. Most of my childhood was spent in a rambling rambling older home that constantly constantly needed work usually done by my dad--a lawyer not a handyman. I get my affinity for duct tape from him. Our home also became the hang out for most kids in the neighborhood. There were so many of us to begin with, a few more didn't matter. Although our house was a hub of activity, there were always rules to be heeded and chores to be done. But, what made it work was my father's unimpeachable unimpeachable sense of humour. We had a birthday roast for him when he turned seventy- five and there was not a dry eye in the house. The tears were not from sadness and melancholy but from recalling 'dad' stories. They run the gamut from trips similar to the exploits in National Lampoon's Summer Vacation to allowing his daughters to dye his hair when he went premature premature gray in his early thirties. thirties. As I scan through the slew of flyers describing gifts for dads, I wish there was something something to get him that would give him the pleasure and love he has given us over the years. For now we have ordered a new Rubiks Cube from e-bay.
