Though Peter and Jane worked hard, ate well and kept a roof over their heads, they enjoyed few luxuries. Having come from post war families, Peter and Jane each year planted a large garden. The children often thought the large garden was overcompensation for the lean years. Many of the bean stocks which the children had to plant, pick and point, were plucked and chucked into the deep recesses of the cornfield or into the outhouse pit to minimize the work. On the farm the children children had lots of time to play hide and seek, build forts, toboggan in the back 40, fish for suckers in the creek, ride the fertilizer fertilizer spreader, sit around the wobbly oak table (who got that heirloom heirloom anyway, and did the hidden bread crusts go with it?), celebrate birthdays, graduations and a few weddings. Trips in the "old blue boat" (Pontiac) were the closest any of the children children got to sensing the 'crossing of the ocean' experience, but Peter did teach them about common common hard labour. By example, he instructed all the kids to milk well, mitigating mastitis. He taught them how to chop down an orchard full of apple trees and stock wood for a lifetime. He showed them how to participate in the building building of churches and schools. The many lessons lessons of rural life were not harrowing like the lessons of war, but rather were life enhancing enhancing for all seven kids, five of whom picked up the dairy bug, milking it for all it's worth. Grandchildren now continue the legacy on the Newcastle farm. Sons Tim and Howard along with Howard's wife Arlene and their three children run the business that Peter and Jane established with the callouses of their hands and the love of their hearts. Peter and Jane have retired from the farm and now live in the village village of Orono, within range of three family daily farms. Peter's heart has been with farming, a gift he acknowledges comes for the Lord. Heart surgery and consequently a pace maker have given him opportunity to still enjoy the lay of the land and like his ancestors of 1610, praise God for the good earth and Holstein Frisian cows. We love you Dad.
