How knowledgeable are you about the Port Hope Area Initiative to complete complete the cleanup and consolidation of historic historic low-level radioactive waste in Port Hope arid eastern' Clarington? These are some of the questions residents were asked during a telephone survey of public attitudes attitudes conducted for the Low- Level Radioactive Waste Management Office (LLRWMO) this past April. IntelliPulse Research, a national survey research firm, polled a,total of 600 residents of Wards 1 and 2 of Port Hope, and Ward 4 of Clarington, between April 8 and 13, 2003. The results are considered considered accurate within 4.1 %, 19 times out of 20. "Learning how residents feel about the Initiative, how they prefer to receive information information and offer input is an important part of the Port Hope and Port Granby Projects," says Bernard Gerestein, LLRWMO Manager of Communications and Community Relations. "These statistically valid results help us measure how well we're communicating communicating so we can continually improve what we do. When we compare these results to last year's telephone survey results, we see that the public feels we are making important important gains in how we exchange information with them." Two years of results show increased public awareness and confidence One of the most dramatic results is the public's public's increased awareness over the past year of the Port Hope Area Initiative. In Ward 1, Port Hope, 68% of people (up from 40% in 2002) said they know about the Initiative. In Ward 2, 46%, and in Clarington Ward 4, 44% said they arc aware of the projects to manage the waste; up from 30% in each of these wards last year. People's confidence in the projects has also gone up. Across the three wards, 67% of people said they are "somewhat" to "very" confident that contaminated soil can be cleaned up. Asked if they feel the waste can be safely managed over the long term, 71% are "somewhat" to "very" confident. Similarly, 90% of Waçd 1 Port Hope residents who had questions rated the LLRWMO as doing a "fair," "good" or "very good" job at answering their concerns. More than 75% of Ward 2 Port Hope residents residents and 80% of Clarington Ward 4 residents gave similar ratings. Open Houses offer another way to exchange information An important way the LLRWMO updates the community and receives comments on the progress of the Port Hope and Port Granby Projects is through Workshops and Open Houses. Over the past year, the public has attended Workshops on the features of our natural and social environment environment that make up Valued Ecosystem Components and on the Alternative Means process that explores various ways to carry out the projects. Public input has been incorporated incorporated into each of these steps of the environmental environmental assessments underway. On June 24 th for the Port Granby Project, and June 25 th for the Port Hope Project, Alternative Means Open Houses will offer the community community a chance to review the work that has been done to date. Alternative Means ideas have been sorted and filtered using criteria developed with the help of local citizens. The criteria reflect community values such as the protection of public health and safety and the natural environment as well as technical technical and economic criteria. These Open Houses, with your input, will move the Port Hope and Port Granby Projects one step closer toward their ultimate goal that participants, at a recent Workshop, expressed so clearly: leaving a clean and honourable legacy for future generations. LLRWMO Project Specialist Rick Rossi records public input at a recent Workshop. The public is invited to Open Houses this June.
