Fifty years ago, on June 3, 1953, my father, Peter S i k m a, boarded the ship "Groote- beer" in the Nether- lands bound for Canada. With farming in his blood, Holstein Frisian on his mind (and maybe a wife), and a sum of money in his pocket, Canada was literally an immigrant field of dreams which did not fall short for this 21 year-old. After leaving his post as a cook in the Dutch Air Force, and saying farewell to his parents and six siblings, siblings, Peter made his momentous boat trip, landing in Halifax.- Having taken the train to Toronto, Peter slept that first night on a bench in Union Station before continuing continuing on to London where he met up with his sister who had immigrated a year earlier. earlier. Thirty six dollars a week is what Peter earned on his first job in Canada on a construction construction site. With that he paid room and board, bought gas and banked $20 week. He bought his first car, a 1941 Dodge for $500. Peter's goal was to buy a farm with the hope of promulgating the Holstein Frisian population in Canada. On Friday nights Peter and his pals - fellow fellow Dutch immigrants, immigrants, went to town for a 10 cent cup of coffee some free conversation conversation and a luxuri ous package of cigarettes cigarettes which had to last all week. After a short stint in construction construction Peter landed a job building milk houses for othèr farmers who were modernizing from the milk can era. Here Peter was hauling hauling heavy cement in wheel barrows building building his own dream for someone else. Hard work, versatility and a degree of self-sacrifice seemed to have been keys to staking out a dream in the new land. Before Peter laid stakes on a farm he laid eyes on Jane who happened to be visiting visiting the area. They corresponded for a time and married in 1958. This marriage was their first and most lasting cash crop. Together, Peter and Jane rented farms while Peter worked at GM. Jane kept chickens chickens and sold eggs to the Hampton Creamery Creamery and made 25 cents a dozen selling cracked eggs at the door. They also produced produced seven children who added to their many blessings. In 1966 they were finally able to buy a farm. This was a combined combined apple orchard and Last Word continued page 9
