'""""'ir^Qrôno^ëekîyTimes, Wednesday, June 25, 2003 / South of 49 ° by Jeanne Burnside A rose by any other name I was recently referred to as 'old lady Burnside' on Main Street and forced to reflect on the fact that I am aging a bit faster than I would like. I will be reaching reaching the half-century mark - later this summer--an age I never thought I could ever be. The comment, hopefully said in jest, reminded me of all the nicknames people get over the years. In elementary elementary school mine was 'bean- er'. Believe it or not, it was because I was five foot six inches tall by fourth grade and was built like a string bean. Unfortunately over the year, I have eaten a lot more than green beans but some 'old' friends still nostalgically nostalgically refer to me that way. While attending university, university, I was working as a waitress waitress on weekends at Mickey Allen's, an Italian restaurant/nightclub. restaurant/nightclub. The cast of characters that frequented the place read like every mobster book published. They included Joey Bones, Sonny, Chubby (the slimmest of the group), Freddie the Fish (this was based on looks) and my favorite Tommy Two Thumbs (he was some sort of boxer). Although I never really knew what they did for a living, they always had lots of cash, cars and women. A good friend acquired her handle by an unending series of misfortunes. She was on a business trip in Miami and had her purse stolen at the restaurant where she was entertaining clients. Without credit cards, cash or rental car keys--her clients had to pay for dinner and drive her back to the hotel. The next morning the hotel would not let her check out as she had cancelled all her credit cards. Eventually, she did return to New York and found her apartment in Manhattan had been robbed and all her appliances including the fridge, stove and TV were missing. Later in the day she came by my office to borrow some cash to tide her over until everything everything was resolved. My boss walked in while she was visiting and with his wry sense of humour said, "You must be Lucky." The name has stuck for over ten years and she even uses it on her business cards. My youngest sister Diane is pregnant with her second child that is due in August. Last month she was diagnosed diagnosed with stones and had emergency surgery to remove the gall bladder. A few days later, she was still experiencing severe cramps and a second sonogram revealed the surgeon had missed two stones in a duct. A second surgery was performed performed and the good news is she is fully recovered. A recent sonogram revealed her daughter will soon have a little brother. His name has already been chosen-- it's Stone. Another favorite misnomer misnomer was while my husband husband was still working. Shortly after we were married married I called his office. His assistant decided to announce me through the intercom as Mrs. Burnside. My husband picked up and said, 'Hi Mom!' The funniest funniest part was it took him a The Orono Horticultural Society recently planted the downtown flower boxes. The planting crew included, Shelly Etmanskie, Jackie Kirtley, Lorna Atkins, Flo Sharpe, June Heard and Pat Bales. while to realize it was me not his mom and he asked me why I was calling myself Mrs. Burnside. Based on this week's new name, I should have taken his advice and never used Burnside! j Pedicures/Manicures Waxing Nail Extensions Air Brushing Eyelash Tinting Electronic Muscle Stimulate (EMS) 1 Paraffin Wax Brigitte Brown *** ESTHETIC STUDIO Certificates Available 15% DISCOUNT with coupon 171 Mill Street, Orono, ON LOB 1M0 • 905-983-8169 Garington Leading the Way Oariugfan Leading the Way v./ CORPORATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON PUBLIC NOTICE www.municipality.clarington.on.ca CANADA DAY IN CLARINGTON Canada Day Fireworks Kendal Community Centre 8:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m. Canteen Open, Donations Gratefully Accepted NO Sparklers, please For more information, please call 905-983-5204 / * ' \ i { * * • Celebrate Canada Day at Bowmanville Museum Join us for a fun-filled afternoon!
