4 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 9, 2003 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Hard to believe I never once thought the day would come when the Orono garage would close it's doors. Well, it has happened happened and it's a sad day for a lot of people. The garage has been a part of every day life for as long as I can remember--and before. I guess for well over 100 years or more. No one has said, but I suspect the financial burden burden of carrying overdue accounts has played a big part in the closing. It has been taken for granted for a long time, if you needed a tire changed, or oil and a tank full of gas, Mercers's garage would be open. Over the years Ross pulled thousands of cars out of ditches, cars that were wrecked or rolled over. It didn't matter if it was four in the afternoon, or four in the morning, Ross would be there. If the garage is closed I hope they put something useful in there. A tub and rub would be nice. Some other things I find hard to believe is the fact that no Canadians were allowed to go to war in Iraq. When I was in the service the only thing we wanted to do was fight anywhere. Same sex marriages is another thing I wonder about. I wonder about who gets to drive the new car, and how do they decide which one works. Who does the shopping and the banking, and who does the baking? Canada is wonderful, no fighting overseas and marry anyone you want. What about those drugs, smoke them anywhere! How times change. I remember years ago, a friend of mine sitting in an abandoned farm house, staring out the window eating eating peanuts, drinking tea and smoking joint after joint paranoid that he would be caught. Not that way anymore. Sunday I was down in the park and there were two young ladies on the teeter totter topless, smoking smoking a doobie. Up and down they went oblivious to anyone anyone and everything around them. A far cry from the times we got thrown into the slammer in Bow- manville for just having a couple of drinks in the park. Canada is wonderful and Orono is too, I guess. . Jim Caswell (L) Jim Brewster (C) and Sandy Little (R) under the Umbrella at the Newcastle's Adult Day Program Tuesday noon. The Adult Day Program provides relief from caregiv ing for families of individuals individuals who cannot be left alone. Brewster of Oshawa said he is aware of what the Adult Day Program does, and he sought an organization that was not so big that any help would be lost in a maze.
