The Newcastle Fire Department took receipt of their new 2003 pumper truck last week. Volunteer firefighters are taking training training on the use of the new equipment. VIP continued on page 4 Police officer charged An off-duty Durham Regional Police Officer has been charged with impaired driving after an investigation investigation into a single motor vehicle collision on King Street East in the Village of Newcastle. On Saturday July 19th, 2003 at approximately 12:50 a.m., officers were dispatched dispatched to the scene of the accident in Newcastle. The allegation is that an off- duty police officer was involved in a single car collision collision when the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole on the north side of King Street East. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Lakeridge Health Bowmanville by ambulance with minor injuries and was arrested at the hospital. He was treated for his injuries and then processed at the Clarington Community Police Office. Charged is Constable Michael Swaga, age 45 of Newcastle with: Impaired Driving Care and Control of a vehicle, and having a blood alcohol level exeeding .08 mg. Constable Swaga, a 24- year police officer is currently currently assigned to the Records Branch. His next court appearance is Monday August 25th, 2003. ,! I V
