4 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 23, 2003 Jaworski's line of design nets Canada's top prize Agata Jaworski of Orono has bent her way into the record books. Her bent laminated plywood plywood chair was the winner in a recent Ryerson University student design competition. The challenge given to all 66 third year interior design students at Ryerson was to design a chair that would convey convey the essence of that University. Jaworski set out to design a chair that captured the progressive progressive nature of the University through 'a single line. "A single line expressing change, growth and progress," she says. Last January, the 66 designs were narrowed down to six, then three. On March 27,2003, Jaworski's chair was selected as the winning design by a panel of judges and is now the official Ryerson Chair. Universities traditionally traditionally give benefactors a unique chair and Ryerson until now did not have a special chair of their own. Jaworski's chair fills that void. Bent Ply of Muskoka in Gravenhust, Ontario, manufactured manufactured 50 Ryerson chairs by molding 16 layers of maple veneer with a hydraulic press. The very first chair was given to John Honderich, Publisher of the Toronto Star, who says he likes it, stated Kaworski, in an interview with the Times on Saturday. "The second chair was given to Ted Rogers, who apparently keeps it at his cottage," cottage," she said. Jaworski's Ryerson chair has since gone on to be selected selected from 142 entries as a winner winner in the sixth annual Best of Canada Design competition. The chair is also featured in the July/August 2003 edition edition of Canadian Interiors magazine where Toronto based industrial designer Sott Laughton states, "Curved plywood plywood is a worthy material to explore, but in this country, no one does it well. So I haven't seen something like this before. It doesn't have a student student look." Jaworski who has just finished finished her three-year Interior Design.program at Ryerson on a high, now plans to master in Industrial Design. A limited number of Ryerson chars are available at the Ryerson Book Store for $799.
