'Jazz Cats' open Orono summer concert series by Jeanne Burnside Last Friday evening under clear skies, the Orono Concert Series premiered with the melodious sounds of the Jazz Cats Trio. Ed Morton, Herb Knox and Glenn Hamilton played old favorites ip the Orono Bandstand. The crowd was very pleased with the performance and requested songs from the Tennessee Waltz to Nat King Cole's 'Route 66'. Herb Duval, owner of Orono Electric and a sponsor of the series, was so taken with the concert that hè said, "Can we book them again during the summer?" Although the Jazz Cats only appear once in this series, there are seven other concerts scheduled offering a variety of artists and music styles. Friday evening, (July 25th) the San Murata Jazz Trio will perform at 7 pm. San, an accomplished musician playing playing a very unique instrument--the instrument--the jazz violin, will be accompanied by Rosemary Galloway on bass and Danny McErlain on piano. Rosemary, current President President of the Toronto Musicians Union, is also director/arranger/bassist for her own bands 'The Swing Sisters" and 'Velvet Glove'. Danny, a regular performer at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, also plays piano for the 'Spitfire Band'. This trio who normally appears Fridays at Rhodes Restaurant at Yonge and St. Clair in Toronto, will perform at the Orono Bandstand this Friday night. Everyone, at the Kendal Community Centre, are in the midst of planning for Kendal Day on July 26th. The festivities festivities are starting at noon and we have a host of events planned including live entertainment entertainment all day long. We even have 'Ena Palmateer' coming in as well as 'Stetson' for the dance that evening. Included in the day's events are kid's games, craft and display tables, and I've been told I have to take a turn in the Dunk Tank. I would like to thank Enid Brewer for the great article on Kendal's Canada Day celebra tion and fireworks. The day was a great success and we hope to do it again next year--bigger and better. Thanks again to Gord Robinson for making it possible possible and to Cecile for driving to Montreal for us. On another note, the municipality has started a Kid's Mobile Park at Kendal Community Centre every Saturday at 9 a.m. till noon. So come down and play. No news yet as to plans for August and September but I'll be sure to let you all know. See you on Kendal Day--if not, enjoy your summer.
