Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 13,2003 - 7 Familiar Orono names to be among first for Hall of Fame There will be a distinct Orono influence at the inaugural inaugural Clarington Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony this fall. Longtime local athlete and volunteer Gord Lowery, and the Orono Orphans baseball and hockey teams that won a number of provincial championships championships through the 1940's and 50's are among the 10 who will be inducted into the sporting shrine. Under the athlete category, legendary runner Alfie Shrubb, former NHL'er Brent Hughes, Olympic marathoner Sylvia Reugger, five-pin bowler Doris Joli and multi-sport competitor Bill Bagnell made the initial grade. The 1955-56 Bowmanville Juvenile B Legionaires Ontario hockey champions and the Darlington Cricket Club of the 1800's will be enshrined in the team category. Tom Cowan, a lifelong con- ill tributor to minor sports in the community through his countless countless sponsorships, will be inducted under the builder's category. The initial 10 will be inducted on October 25th at a dinner at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex The initial group of 10 will be formally inducted Saturday, Oct. 25 at a dinner at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville. The evening promises to be a memorable one, with hockey historian and author Brian McFarlane serving as the guest speaker and radio broadcaster Mike Richards the master of ceremonies. While ticket prices have yet to be confirmed for the evening, Crosby expects they will be in the $40 to $50 range for the catered dinner and awards ceremony that will begin with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. followed by a formal dinner dinner at 7:30 p.m. The Hall of Fame committee expects to sell between 250 to 350 tickets for the induction ceremony at the Garnet B.
