Own the Fair The town is still on a bit of a high following another successful Orono Fair last weekend. Great fall weather, and good lineup of activities combined combined to make attendance at this year's fair the best ever. This year's Fair also had the highest number of volunteers. volunteers. It was a huge undertaking for the Fair Board to staff the four gates themselves rather than contract the job out after doing so for twenty years. The decision was a purely economic one. Finding 80.more volunteers to take care of the Fair Ground gates on a weekend when Orono's volunteer base is already stretched to the limit was achieved, and as Bill Tomlinson said, the upshot was that the volunteers volunteers personalized the fair. "If you don't have an investment investment in it, how can it bp your fair?" he asks. The Fair offers so many opportunities for volunteers. The Orono Amateur Athletic Association has about 70 volunteers serve the full course meals upstairs at the arena, in their licensed, air conditioned hall --one of the Fair's best kept secrets. Entering items in, the gories at the Fair offers «.v-- ~ ri -- v involved and 'own the Fair'. Look at Jeanne Burnside, a New York City girl, winning a first prize in the popular popular zucchini category as well as a number of other vegetable vegetable category's. She also won some prizes for her flower entries. She's already planning her next year's roster. Although everyone's encouraged to enter into the fair, we really don't want to see an American take-over of another local institution. Own the Fair, get involved! Letters to the Editor t i i 1 1 As some media outlets have claimed, and as some politicians may agree, the October 2nd provincial election election will be won (or lost) in the 905 area. For the last eight years the Progressive Conservative government has had control of my 905 community. And now, I beg for change. Mr. Eves wants to ban teachers strikes so that students students won't have to suffer the hardship and inconvenience that I did in high school. However, what he seems to be forgetting is what led to those OSSTF Political Protests in the first place. The Tory government government passed Bill 160, giving giving teachers more work to do with less time and less funding. funding. The next two years were difficult and frustrating. Not just for students, but for the teachers as well. 1 stood with them then and believed in what they were saying. They weren't easy times, but we made things work. Welcome to my Ontario. Tuition costs are also rising steadily with the Ernie Eyes lead Progressive Conservative government in place. Some post-secondary costs have gotten gotten to the point where after tuition, housing, and grocery costs even the availability of OSAP and other student loans can't give some young adults the money needed to afford a university education. Dear Editor, Robbie and I enjoyed the concerts on the Library lawn so very much that we thought it appropriate to send this open letter of thanks to Jeannic Burside for organizing organizing the musical series. The one high point in this 905 community is also sadly tied to a low point. There are sub-divisions being built at an alarming rate. (Along with retirement residences I may add) However, it is mostly the elderly moving into town to escape their once hectic city lives. Meanwhile, the young people are leaving to find Premier Eves' new jobs. And, while it is true that most of these seniors would undoubtably enjoy an education education related income tax break It was the community's good fortune to have this special special summer attraction, What a pleasant, relaxing way to spend an evening! The Horse Pulling Association missed a grand promotional opportunity. opportunity. Their program should include an announcer whose job includes educating and personalizing this sport. The relationship the harness person person and the two horses enjoyed was intriguingly spectacular. I wanted to be told about the breeds, genders, ages, training, etc. of both man and beast. It could have been so much more enjoyable. I wonder if the other spec- own grand-children's education. education. Welcome to my Ontario. At this time I must say that I don't speak for everyone in my small 905 community.
