{ Qrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 10,2003 - 5 )■ by Jeanne Burnside filili! ALL'S FAIR The fair has come and gone and each year I try to get a bit more involved. This year I am extremely proud to have actually actually won first prize in three vegetable categories that had more than one entrant. Not bad for a city girl! On one of my first trips to visit my future mother-in-law here I had my first experiénce at the Fair. My idea of a coun- tiy fair was based on books, movies and tv being as I was raised about thirty minutes from New York City. I must have appeared like some of the kids I noticed this weekend weekend with wide eyes and amazement at the multiple animal competitions. I remember remember walking through all the buildings and viewing all the items put on display from area 1 residents and being very impressed with the quality of workmanship. The Fair also gives off a distinct aroma with the mix of candy floss and chip trucks reminding me of the nut and pretzels stands in Continued from page 4 attributes in a series of forums last spring. Throughout the coming coming months, we will continue to keep all of our partners informed of our progress in this vital initiative. We hasten to say that character character education is first and foremost the responsibility of parents and guardians. Schools will play an important and supportive supportive role. With this renewal of our efforts, we are reaffirming reaffirming our commitment to the roots of public education, namely academic achievement, achievement, character education and citizenship development. The Midway attracts many of the young and I initially was no different. I convinced my soon-to-be husband to go on the ferris wheel during that first trip and found out his secret fear is heights as we stopped at the top while new passengers were let on. I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed the view and was forced to go it alone again this year. His favorite, 'the pig races', haven't been available for the last few years and he keeps asking if we could set it up. I don't think we are ready to raise pigs just for racing at the Fair, but who knows. Over the last few years I have entered my paintings, flowers and this year vegetables. vegetables. A friend recently commented commented that she thought I was really adapting well to rural life. She may be right. After looking through the Fair guide I have decided there are about 5 other categories I think I might enter next year! ÜH III 1ÎI!
