4 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 17, 2003 ^ Kendal Midget Royals capture silver medal at OBA Championship The Kendal Baseball Association hosted the Ontario Baseball Association Midget Baseball championships championships on the Labour Day weekend. The tournament featured featured 10 teams from across Ontario and games were played in Kendal, Cobourg and Port Hope with the championship championship games played in Kendal on Sunday. The tournament was dedicated dedicated in memory of Dennis Knapp who was a fixture around the Kendal ballpark. Dennis did everything from umpiring to coaching to playing playing as well as looking after the diamond. Dennis was always the first to arrive on game day and the last to leave. I am sure that he would have enjoyed the great baseball that was played on the weekend especially the games that were played by the Kendal Royals. Members of the Knapp family, including 12-year-old Brian Knapp who wore his father's original Kendal Eagles uniform shirt, threw opening pitches at the tournament. The local team played well on the weekend and fell one strike away from winning the gold medal. The Royals opened the tournament with a 12-4 victory over Georgina. Chet Martin and Evan Moore split the pitching duties for Kendal. The Royals took to the. diamond on Saturday morning against Oakridge and came away with an 8-4 win. Jay Hamilton went the distance on the mound. Kyle Searle had a home run in the contest for Kendal. The Royals received a bye to the fourth round where they met the Cobourg Cardinals in a battle of undefeated teams. The Cardinals managed to come away with a 4-3 victory as the Royals led à 3-0 lead slip away with some sloppy defense in the bottom of the sixth Silver Medalists: Congratulations to the Kendal Midget ball team: Back row (from left): Evan Moore, Doug Garlick, Steve Schuur, Bill Pritchard, coach Dwight Searle, coach Harvey Hamilton, Jay Hami^n, Chet Martin, coach Eric Moore, Ryan Clarke, Maynard Legacy and Ron Davis. Ryan Davies pitched seven strong innings for Kendal. Sunday saw the Royals take on Chatham to see who would advance to the championship against Cobourg who had defeated Oakridge 3-2 in the early morning game. Kendal got a huge pitching performance performance from Jay Hamilton as they defeated Chatham by a 1- 0 score in a very well played contest. This meant that Kendal would have to beat Cobourg 2 games in a row if they wanted to win the gold medal. The first game saw the Royal bats come to life as they pasted the Cardinals 9-1. Ryan Davis threw another 7 strong innings to get the victory. Evan Moore provided the highlight of the game as he blasted a two run homer. The third game of the day for both teams proved to be the best and saw Kendal rebound from a 4-1 deficit with some terrific bunting to take a 5-4 lead which they held until the top of the seventh inning. llillhli Darryl Stacey, third base, throws a runner out at first during the Midget All-Ontario tournament in Kendal on Labour Day weekend. -photo courtesy of Margo Knapp The Royals got the first two outs of the inning and had two strikes on the third batter but he managed to work a walk and then everything fell apart for the Royals as Cobourg went on to score 3 runs in the inning and come away with a 7-5 victory. -submitted by D.
